Weird Tack-Head Tom Conversion Idea?

Loading...

So I have this 1941 Ludwig & Ludwig kit that was thoroughly messed up before I bought it. Finish stripped, gold painted hardware etc. It was originally a Swing Session, based on the sizes.

I've done what I can to restore the snare and kick, and now am turning my attention to the toms. They were originally had tacked reso heads, but they had been removed before I got them. Reinstalling the tacked head seems like a questionable idea, but I'd like the option to use them with a reso head. And I will NOT be drilling any holes. Pics of one of the toms in question are here: https://imgur.com/a/4af4X

So my crazy idea is to replace the single-sided lugs with double-sided ones, and source some longer rods to tension both heads off the batter-side lug. Sort of like a Club Date kit but with the lugs off-center. That way I can always return the kit to stock, while having more usable/tunable toms.

Is this a bad idea? Has this been tried before? Thanks!

I'm no expert but I think it's a brilliant idea. No risk, all reversible and very functional. I cannot see a downside.

Fantastic idea!

I definitely would never recommend adding holes to such a beautiful drum. You should be able to pick the Imperial lugs and as a matter of fact here is a link to a sale on the bay

Love to see pictures when your done

Well, glad everyone agrees it's a good idea! Now all I have to do is source some flat imperial lugs, which are (unsurprisingly) expensive.
