war time drum inspired

Folks, I'd like to share my latest project with you. Not vintage, but vintage-inspired.

This is a 15 x 6,5 inch snare drum that I designed and built myself (the only things I did not make myself are screws/inserts/heads/snarewires). It is inspired by some war-time drums I've seen. I like the bulky looks of those. I was thinking about making a very bulky, almost completely wooden drum.

The shell is douglas pine, segmented. The outside special-painted, the inside oiled and waxed. I'm thinking of wrapping it with aged white marine pearl. The hoops, lugs, strainer, butt-end are beech. Pure sound custom snare wires.

I haven't been playing it or experimented with tuning etc.

Incredible! I'd love to know more details. For instance, are the rod receivers on the hoops glued on? Do they allow for high tensions? Can the strainer be tensioned while the snares are on?

Yes the rod-receivers (or "ears") are glued on. These hoops are prototypes, next time I'll make them differently. I was doubting: would they be strong enough to hold high tension? Just to be sure I screwed each ear from the inside of the hoop with two screws. They can't break off now. With the drum-dial I measured a tension of 90. No problem.

I've been thinking a long time about the hoops. I wanted wood hoops, but I didn't want the kind where the holes are half way up a vague ear and halfway up the hoop it self (all wood hoops kind of look like that). I wanted ear and hoop to be a seperate thing.

In the meantime I figured out an even simpeler (and stronger) design. But with current business on my day time job, it wil be another year before I'll test that out.

The snare tension can't be adjusted with snares on. That's a compromise I had to make. I wanted the design to be as simple as can be.

maybe, but then I'll use pre-existing shells and only make the hardware.

On the Dutch internet-market (called Marktplaats) sometimes Sonor Actions show up for little money. Nice quality beech shell with plastic hardware. Sound great!. Maybe I'll buy a set of those once. I have about 6 hours a week to spend on this hobby, so making segmented shells for a whole kit will take a year. There to much idea's in my head to be stuck in just one project.

Next time I'll use oak for the hardware though, I would like a little more "drama" in the grain.

That is a beautiful drum. It reminds me of "Craftsman"-era American furniture. Or Danish Modern from the early 60's. Very inspirational.
