Walberg and Auge Marching Snare Project

Loading...

Looking good so far! Cooperman sells several sizes/types of gut for snares. Speak with Jim Ellis and he can set you up.

Search the forum for threads on calf heads. That has been discussed here at some length previously. My take in short: Stern Tanning produces professional quality heads albeit at a premium price - they run you about $70 a piece. There are cheap Pakistani heads available for a fraction of the price but you definitely get what you pay for - the consistency and quality varies wildly.

Looking forward to seeing this one cleaned up soon!

Progress!

I've finally found some time to work on the Walberg and Auge marching snare. All of the metal bits have cleaned up nicely, although I'd say that about 10% of the finish on each piece is gone. The lemon oil treatment really brought out some amazing color - just as hoped.

Bare calf-skin heads have arrived -- more on that later.

Update: I've tucked my first calf-head. The DIY tucking tool is made from a one hole cable strap. After cutting a slot in a foam paint brush handle, I slid the cable strap in then added a small hose clamp. To prevent damage to the new head, I covered the hose clamp with electrical tape. I also de-burred the cable strap with a metal file. It aint pretty, but works like a charm. The only surprise came when I attempted to install the wet head in place. It was a very tight fit. There's only one head on the drum at the moment. Hitting it with my fingers, it sounds like a tympani.
