It is possible-I say POSSIBLE-that if the lug were isolated from the broken area via an inside and outside plate 1/4" larger than the lug itself, maybe 1/8" thick aluminum (like the plastic ones that came on Vista's)-this could work. I recently repaired a 12" smoke Vista tom with Weld-On #3, but it was double-headed. It broke because the bottom rim WASN'T ON IT...I do agree that it will never be the same as a good solid shell, but, nothing like a good challenge!Burger Kin
Since John asked me to respond...I will.
It can be glued. How long will it last? I would say not very long because of the extensive crack separation.
It can be braced. What will it sound like? Considering it will not resonate the way it originally did.....not so good. A larger drum might sound better but such a small drum all braced up like this one would need just could not sound all that great.
When you can get a replacement 7X10 shell at Precision for $103 (edged) or get one from DrumMaker for $82 (edged)....I personally would not even waste the energy on this shell.
Thanks all!
So here is my strategy and my thinking... I'm going to glue and brace this drum while I spend some time searching for a real Vistalite shell to replace it. Just me... but if I can put a Ludwig shell back on the stand... I will feel better about it.
If I reach the point where this one comes apart again or I have given up on finding an original Vistalite drum then I'll go with the replacement.
John, D-jinx... thanks... I know you're right about the integrity of the shell being a losing battle but I think the drum will still sound fine after it is braced.. it will just be an ugly little drum. Hurting
