So here it is folks.. Finally finished the restoration job on my vintage Yamaha 8000 bass drum hoop which i believed was unsalvageable..Brought it to a Luthier of violins and classical stringed instruments to have the plies glued together properly (i don't have the equipment to do so) and the results were great. Glued properly by professionals, and then aesthetically transformed by me. A few minor errors along the way, but nothing that some advice given to me by fellow forum members couldn't fix..
(Thanks guys ! ;))
For a solid repair, i bought some maple veneer at the local Home Depot (unfortunately they didn't have birch) and wood filler to cover some of the damaged spots and even out the slight ripples caused by the water damage and glue repair.. Sanded lightly with 180 grit and then steel wool for finishing the stain. I restained with a mixture of two different stains to achieve a similar factory finish (by trial and error, of course ) and even though i'm not a pro like JC Cabinets, :D,
i think the results are pretty darn good ! Here are the before and after pics..
