Vintage W&A Kit Restoration

Vinny - Thanks for the lead! I already have a cymbal stand and hi-hat that came with the kit. I haven't had time to polish the stands up with all the work I've been doing on the kit. I was up half the night doing a personalized graphic for the bass drum. Hopefully I'll find some time to do the cymbal stand, but the top of the hi-hat is missing so I won't be using that one.

Scott - Yep! That's the stuff! Has a Gorilla on the label. I put a drop on a toothpick and I wipe it back and forth in a long 'S' pattern leaving tiny streaks of glue on the surface. It'll hold the felt on there so the drums don't slip out!

Mitch - Thanks for the tips! When I was in my 20's I had a good buddy who was a professional photographer. On more than a few occasions (when he had a shoot with a hot model,) I would burn down a couple of doobies and watch the shoot! I learned a lot just hanging out checking how he set-up the lights, backgrounds etc. I didn't learn a whole lot because my attention was usually on the model, but I did pick up a few tips along with a lot of unused wood. :p

Wow, two months! Time flies when you're having fun!!!

Minus X-mas/New Years week and the week I was on the DL from the gout attack, it averages out to a drum a week. Not too shabby considering the 100's of hours of work it took to rehabilitate this kit. I think I spent at least 25+ hours alone at the buffing station doing metal parts. Possibly more. It was a genuine challenge on every level. Completing this project is one of the most gratifying restoration jobs I have ever tackled... and I've tackled a few hairy ones in my time. This one beats them all by a country mile. I'm a happy camper. I gave it my very best and as it turns out, my best was good enough this time.

Waiting on the photo equipment to arrive so I can do the photo shoot for the Grand Finale. Should all be here by Monday. Shots of the complete kit will follow...

First thing - the older tacked head on the smaller tom matches its slightly warmer wrap! They're like, the same, but different! Never re-tack that head!

At some point I'd want to try the old tom-to-the-left-of-the-hi hat deal. The bigger one with the T-rods obviously...:) [not that the tom stand isn't awesome]

Lastly, the colour temp of these pics is perfect. Daylight - nothing quite like it. I find if you can get daylight as a primary source and then have some warmer tungsten hitting it from the side, it really pops. You can still do this with your photo lights which will be daylight balanced, stick a couple of lamps just out of frame. Not the hideous little curly-cue flourescents of course...:)

John,

You can't be given enough kudos for the efforts you put into this restoration. I think the popularity of this restoration (and this thread) is due in part to the fact that we just aren't seeing enough kits of this vintage and era. We seem to focus primarily on the drums of our youth, so when you and a few others (Mike C. for example) display drums from the 20's or 30's, it really grabs our attention.

You or Glenn should send some photos of the finished set to Gus, the original owner. It would alleviate any remorse he has about parting with this old friend.

Hope your photo equipment arrives soon.Jumping2

Or... maybe he's feeling bad that he sold them! We haven't heard a peep out of him for almost two months. I was talking to Bev about it and she was the one that told me; "All this talk about how rare the kit is may have given him a case of sellers remorse and that's why he's not commenting."

Gus knows that all he has to do to find out what happened to the drums is to log in here. (If) he's feeling bad about selling the kit, I don't want to send him a bunch of photos to rub it in his face. If he's ok with everything, I'm sure he looks in here from time to time to see how I'm doing with the kit. Gus knows right where to look if he wants to see how the drums turned out. I just want to give him some space in case he's feeling bad, or remorseful about the sale. I -hope- he's following along and feeling really good about how the kit came out. I 'hope' that's the case anyway.

Gus... are you following along????? What do -you- think about the restoration work so far? I'd love to hear from you if you're lurking. How'd I do with your old kit? :D
