Vintage TAMA Star and Royalstar Crystar

Loading...

Hi Everyone,

I'm new to this forum, this is actually my first post.

I read some of the Forum postings and I think it's really great that there are so many People out there that are as passionate as myself about vintage drums.

I recently purchased these two vintage Tama drums, within 1 month !!!

I guess I was very lucky.

The 1st kit is a STAR Blue Oyster Pearl finish with a 14" snare, 22" bass drum, 16" floor, 13" tom.....all original 100 % There are a few holes on the base drum shell that were made when the previous owner installed a Ludwig Rail conselet......in order to hold a ---------COWBELL!!!! Other than that it's perfect, almost mint.

I have to say that contrary to some posts that seem to indicate that the Early Tama & Pearl drum kits were of the same manufacturing quality. I think these drums must've worried the big USA drum outfits a little, They're actually very solid and well built. I've had numerous "stencil" kits in the past, but they don't come close to these Beauties.

The second kit is a rare Royalstar "Crystar" clear acrylic drum kit. It's really good looking, especially with the teardrop lugs. The drums are 20" bass drum, 16" floor tom, 12" and 13" rack toms. I mounted the toms on Ludwig Vibraband tom holders.....my son loves this set-up. The drum is almost 100% as well.......after the bass drum - tom mount screw insert was stripped, the previous owner decided to change the mount that is connected to the bass drum with some generic mount......that means screwing all kinds of ridiculous holes in the acrylic.....it works great with the original Royalstar tom holder stem, but what a shame.......anyhow, they still look great.

Hello,

Welcome from me as well.

You got some very fine drums there! Did you buy all at these conditions?

Because there are some modification made at them ...

1st kit:

You may find it in this catalogue (pages no. 2 for the set and no. 3 for the wrap):

http://www.tamadrum.co.jp/anniversary/page.php?cat_id=5&year=1966

The 'STAR' logo on the bass drum head is not original and a - may I say: poor - copy only. If you look at the other prospectus on that page, you surely will find an exact image of how the 'STAR' logos looked like at that time. (Just for the case that you want it to look as original as possible.)

2nd kit:

Sure that it's a TAMA? My guess is that it is also, and a late, STAR ... Can you make a close-up pic of the badge and a lug, please?

It's a good idea to separate the rack toms from the bass drum. And it looks like there have been made no modifications to the shells for the RIM-system. Greatly done!

BTW: Do you also still have the original fitting double tom holder in your hands?

Greetings - Ralf

Hi Ralf, the Star Drum head logo was made poorly by myself....I don't have the original reso head with logo.

The acrylic tama......actually you're right, it is a ROYALSTAR round badge. I didn't make any modifications to the shells, didn't have to when I installed the Ludwig vibrabands. I couldn't find any catalogue from the Tama web site with the round badge acrylic royalstar, I'm guessing they don't have the catalogue or was the earliest acrylic drum that royalstar produced, maybe 1970?????

Hi Drumsteroo,

My best guess, concerning the producing date and considering the

type of lugs, for the 2nd drumset is 1972-74. Maybe just one of the very last

kits under the brand STAR before they changed over to TAMA (in 1974).

Or even a prototype?

If you wish, you may copy the logo for the drum head out of the catalogue

at a copy shop nearby to you. If they're professional, they offer the

possibility to do that directly onto a transparant foil. Easily done then!

You may also check this page:

http://www.drumarchive.com/Star/

There you can find a copy of my original catalogue, which I proudly still possess.

Greetings, Ralf

NB: did you check out my Royal Star here in the Gallery?
