Vintage Ludwigs Refurb Project - Indiana

Hello VDF folks! I have been out of the Vintage Drum game for about 5 years and have decided I was ready to tackle a new project.

Came across some vintage Ludwigs at a local church that had been in a closet for a long time. They wanted something newer and playable to use during their worship services so I traded them a Mapex Pro M Kit that I had rebuilt and was perfect for what they needed.

I wasn't exactly sure what I traded for I only knew they were Ludwigs and they were older. I didn't know how old.

I have the following Drums in White Marine Pearl (Aged very nicely with that yellow/green patina} 22 inch bass drum, 13 Rack Tom, 14 inch snare and a 16 inch floor tom that is in Blue Onyx Pearl.

I would like some help identifying these drums and hear any suggestions you experts may have about the quality of them and what you would do with them.

I think this would be a great kit to refurbish and play out with.

Thoughts?

Blessings,

Scott

The WMP drums are 1959 Transition Badge Ludwigs with what looks like a Classic/Buddy Rich snare drum. The 3 piece is valuable alone. The floor tom although it's an orphan, is a sought after drum by itself. You'll do ok if you decide to sell.

Too many great drums to list here!

Now why i can't I find treasures like that in some church basement..? I would wait and see if you could find and possible trade the floor tom for an original white marine pearl floor tom, or sell it and take that recoop to buy the Wmp floor..

Nice score and even better trade, as it all worked for both the church and for you ;)

I think that most churches throw them in rummage sale , go to them you mite be surprized

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Hi Guys! Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to sell the orphan floor tom. I've found a similar color Ludwig floor tom on Ebay and have purchased it. Hopefully it will match closely in color.

Can someone tell me the best thing to use to clean the shells without damaging the wrap? The wrap is in great shape just needs a real good cleaning. I love the way the Marine Pearl has aged over time and wouldn't want to damage or change that in any way.

Also, does anyone know where I might find the few parts that are missing? Especially for the throw off on the snare. It is missing the lever for the throw off, I'm missing one Lug,Claw and T Handle on the bass and one of the original knobs on the rack tom for the dampening adjustment.

Thanks again guys!

Peace

S

I had great luck sourcing Club Date parts from these guys -

The excellent dude there was happy to talk vintage drum gear on the phone while he checked the parts bin!

The Village Drum and Music looks to be a great store; I checked their website out and was amazed at the amount of stuff that they managed to cram into what looks like a pretty small building. They definitely have some pretty cool kits, and what looks to be a good cymbal selection.
