Vintage Ludwig Supersensitive Snare Drum

Loading...

Hello, I just found this forum and had to join! I have a question about a vintage 1960-63 pre serial number Ludwig Supersensitive Snare Drum. I found the shell, hoops and lugs in my moms attic and decided to "restore" the drum. I put that in quotes because this drum didn't need much help. It was stored well and is in great condition. (no pitting and few scratches) The only thing that is not original on this drum are the pieces that hold the snare on... I went to a local drum shop and they had the pieces kicking around out back. So they are from the same era drum, just not this particular drum. I spent the money and put new heads and a puresound strainer on the drum. I was thinking of selling it and was just wondering what a drum like this would go for today?

Thanks!

-Matt

Is the shell chrome over brass? I don't know much about the super sensitives. I would be interested in it though.

Ya know, Im not sure how to tell if its chrome over brass, but if I were to guess by the sound, I would say no.

Brass drums weigh in at around 10-11lbs. The alloy is 7-8lbs. A magnet will not stick to brass...or Ludalloy for that matter. Weight is the key along with the turned in bearing edges.

Thanks for the info! I tried the magnet approach and it does not stick to the shell. It does have turned in bearing edges and weighs about 10 lbs. So it looks like I have a brass drum. So it looks like I need to work on my ear for drums! Thanks
