I had a laugh at that one when I saw it too. It probably has zero tone. I came across an old 16" K at a local music store about a year ago that had almost no bell. It clanked when struck with a stick, but that was it...just "clank." What a shame!

I happen to own a 16" A. Zildjian & Cie crash that I've been playing for about 2 years. It's quite thin, but I haven't cracked mine. Someone must have torqued down on the felts and bashed it a while.

I saw that too, I was thinking of getting it, then removing the bell and TIG welding in a new bell section. I have a destroyed 16" Z custom rock crash with a perfect bell lol, I better check my funds lol!

Here's an AA hi hat top that had a 4.5 inch crack,I tig welded it...

I could see how that may work for a hihat, but the bell of a cymbal (especially crashes and rides) has a tremendous amount to do with the overall sound of the cymbal. You may wind up with two worthless cymbals. Or, it may be a cool effects cymbal. I wouldn't risk it, though.

Well here's one I did on a Paiste Signature power crash, and also a Zildjian A thin crash both had nasty cracks near the bell, and the paiste even had some keyholing, I welded them all, and they sound pretty darn good. I think bell "transplant" would work. It would just take some time, it could be done.

Well, I sold two Tig welded A custom crashes to a drummer that plays on some pretty big stages, and he has been using them for 3 weeks now, he loves the sound and the price! They certainly sound better than a chopped cymbal...If you got an old cracked cymbal I could weld it up for you and you could check it out in person ;-)

Hmmm...we do have a 16" A Fast Crash at the church that has a crack around the bell. I'm awfully tempted to try if you say it sounds fine. I'll have to try to talk the leadership into letting me take it. They pretty much let me make decisions when it comes to the drum set, so it shouldn't be a problem...it's worthless as is anyway. I may be getting back to you on that.

I sure would have thought that heating the cymbal up by welding it would have caused some seriously adverse reactions.

It does if you try to go to fast. I have learned that I need plan out my repairs (much like planning surgery lol), so I don't loose my preheat or put to much heat in the cymbal and cause it to warp. I have only had any bad heat related issues while trying to repair cracks over 4 inches.

If you get your hands on that cymbal let me know(ryan 757 871 2048). And send me a pic to that number if you can, so I can see how bad the cymbal is. Speaking of which; what "kind" of cymbal is it anyway?

Not sure what you mean by "kind." It's a 16" A Zildjian Fast Crash...cast bronze. Is that what you were asking?
