Vintage 20’s Mystery Ludwig Snare

Loading...

I have owned this drum for about 20 years, and never really looked into what it might be.

It is a basic 5x14 Ludwig and Ludwig heavy nickel over brass two piece shell “Standard” snare. However, this one has black nickel plated hoops, the Ludwig logo is actually engraved (vs the usual stamped logo) and it has the initials EDH engraved one panel over from the strainer. As you can see, this looks to be professionally engraved at the factory.

I have seen one or two other similar drums with black nickel hoops over the years. I also vaguely recall seeing the engraved logo before. My thoughts are that perhaps it was made for an endorser (EDH), or a custom build for a customer. That might explain the engraved logo and initials.

Any thoughts on this drum and any idea who EDH might be? As a Rogers collector, I am not as informed about these drums as many of you Ludwig collectors and would appreciate your input.

From what i can see, it appears to be an 8 lug model? If so, that's the All Round model. Those heavy two piece shells are some of the most sought after. The Ludwig insiginia itself was common during the period. Anybody's guess on the initials though. Would be great to know. Here is the snare page from the '23 Ludwig Catalog.

Thanks Mike! I am glad to have that catalog page! Yes 8 lug. Are you saying that the earlier versions had the engraved logo vs the stamped logo?

I missed that. Yours is engraved. I just checked my drum of the same and it is stamped. My initial response was to point out that the logo and where it was at was common. Others may know more about the engraving aspect. It does appear to me that the engraving on your Ludwig and the initials are much the same. Very neat!

If he don`t I will.

Yes,...Ludwig engraved the earlier logo and should have Pat. Pen. on the throw lever.

Here`s one from 24, I can make it bigger if you need. The size and fonts, I`m not so sure of but member Curotto probably has them all and is a go to guy.

It`s a drum,.....Hit It !!

Mike and Oddball, thanks! It does sound like earlier versions were engraved. Oddball’s is a different font, but then so were BB’s. Plausible guess re the initials. But, they are engraved as opposed to being scratched or etched (like a school might do).

Any ideas on the black nickel hoops (ala BB finish). I have seen that before.
