Unstamped cymbal question-

Loading...

So I respond to a C/L ad for a 17"Zildjian cymbal w/bag for $25,figuring that is an odd size for a ZBT or a Scimitar.Owner tells me"that cymbal has been from Goose Bay,Labrador to Miami Beach"...AND IT "LOOKS" like an A.So I take it home.It is 17 1/4" in dia.and sort of reminded me of a ride my Grandfather would have played. But NO STAMP-no markings of any kind.It is old-it has some of those "wobbly"lathe marks old cymbals have. Some keyholing,a couple dents, and a casting flaw in the bell.Any ideas,folks...

I agree with Mike. I had a small stamp (1 1/4"), late 50s/early 60s era A, and the stamp was virtually undetectable. I've heard of others having a similar experience. I REALLY had to work to find it - right light and all of that.

ive bought several cymbals off of ebay based on lathing and appearance. seller says no stamp. i put it under the light here at my desk and also use the magnifying glass. have usually found the stamps.

sometimes you'll find a cymbal that has been cracked and the overall cymbal size has been reduced. in most cases, you'd have to do a good bit of reducing to eliminate the stamp though.

I have run across this several times on old avedis zildjian cymbals where the patina is so thick it literally fills in the stamp.

Well thank you all so very much-.My friends Zildjian A "seconds"only had the ink stamped "S",no other mark. It's possible, but it looks too old.And the oddball dimension.Did Zilco/Azco stamp all their cymbals?

Regardless of the stamp, it looks like you did just fine for $25.

Well I have played the cymbal out twice at church-not the sound of a modern A,but more of a "note"which spreads after 1/2 a second.Good for this venue,I think...certainly money well spent.ALSO,when I looked in the cymbal bag today,a card fell out stating the drummers name, lessons given and studied with ALAN DAWSON...well SH1T,how bout that!

I have a 21" thin ride/crash cymbal included with those CL Rogers drums I bought that have no markings whatsoever that I can find but looks just like a. A Zildjian.

Sounds nice too. I actually like it better for a crash than a ride. Lathing looks just like a older Zildjian. So there actually are Zildjians without a stamp? Maybe I need to get out the magnifier and look closer. But I don't see anything.

I got an old 18" ride with some other cymbals the other day (Zyn super HH top and Paiste 101 HH top) and couldn't find a stamp anywhere. Unfortunately it has an edge crack but i figured it'd be good for a young learner i'm building a kit for. Anyway, I played it and couldn't believe how good it sounded so decided to give it a clean to see if a stamp would be more visible. A very faint, previously undetectable Paiste formula 602 stamp appeared. Even with the small crack it's a keeper. I still have to look long and hard to find the stamp, and i know it's there.

So I guess I'm saying double, triple checkCooked Egg
