High end modern drums are just as good as vintage drums. Obviously I won't compare a Pearl Export to a 60s Ludwig kit, but you're getting incredible quality out of a modern day Ludwig classic maple kit or any other high end kit from other brands.

Besides with good heads and good tuning and good drummer can make almost anything sound good.

Vinnie Colaiuta, a true Drum Master, but musicwise often overplaying.

dw drums - too 'perfect', too loud and non charismatic.. and those Lugs...

China Cymbals - leave them to the Chinese.

Blast Beats, not a Blast for me.

#1.) Too many "monster" drummers spewed out of too many music schools with staff comprised of "used-to-be" famous drummers who end up as teachers because that's the only way left to make a reasonable living for them since there aren't enough gigs....and going on the road isn't an option, either. They teach all their tricks and their students become great players which creates....*see above* rinse/ repeat....;)

#2.) "Mad Scientist" drum designers have gone away, so we don't get to anticipate any new, revolutionary developments/designs. We mainly just get new finish options now. On a historical basis, this period will be read as part of another Dark Ages -nothing really unique or "wild" for future collectors to look for.

#3.) "Raw" cymbals that sound like poo but cost a mint.

#1 for me has always been professional drummers that wear shorts on stage because they think nobody will see their legs, or care for that matter. I think it's unprofessional and ugly. They've all done it at one point - Peart, Ehart, Gadd.... I just don't like it.

Bingo! Big drum sets! Yes Sir

Anything more than 5 drums is a cry for attention and completely unnecessary. Yes Terry Bozzio, I'm talking about you!;)

Hate me if you will! but here goes:

'You 'gotta' have high end drums (like dw) to sound professional-(for outdoor Summer events in the sun and dust I use an old $50 Peace set I reconditioned- we opened for a 'big name' band last year and the pro sound man said my set sounded 5 times better than the many thousand$$ their drummer had on stage)

Showmanship is just 'showing off'- (I'm an entertainer as well as a musician-they pay for a show)

Triggering is 'cheating'- (if I want a canon sound for the floor tom I'm not bringing a canon to the gig...)

You can't recut bearing edges- it will ruin the drums! (I'll do what I want to MY drums and whoever gets them when I die can deal with it)

-okay better stop now.... !!
