Tuning drums with die cast hoops

Thought i'd just post a thread concerning tuning drums with die cast hoops. I recently borrowed my brother's Tama Superstar Custom kit, which sounds like a monster, and i never knew that tuning drums with diecast hoops was such a monumental task and is very different than tuning with flange hoops, at least for those who have never used drums with DC hoops. I'd like to know if there are any tips or tricks someone may have in order to get them tuned up quicker, type of heads that work well with DC hoops, or any other piece of advice anyone may have on this topic. I'm gonna do a small tour across Quebec and Ontario Canada, so it would be nice to get the drums in full form quickly.

I don't have much experience with them myself, but check out Kenny Sharretts on youtube.. he's a professional drum tech and has some tuning videos on there and if I remember right, he talks about tuning drums with die cast rims.

Brewkowski- LOL ! Funny you should mention him. His was the first in a series of very helpful videos i checked out when i was trying to find videos on Youtube regarding this subject. I found his method extremely helpful, but i ended up using my own tuning method, mixed in with some of his advice, in regards to minimal turns on the tension rods and the 'little goes a long way" process. I think this is where my problem was in the beginning. After seeing Kenny Sharretts' video, it helped me a lot. Got the drums sounding really great, but they do need fresh heads, as they have Tama stock resos and Remo clear Ambassador tops that are still usable. So my goal is to put the clear ambassadors on the bottoms, and buy some new coated ambassador X's, which are basically the same head only with a thicker more durable coating.

Hey Michael ! As i mentioned to Brewkowski, i managed to get them tuned up nicely and followed that drum tech Kenny Sharretts' advice. Working out so far, but i also kept my method in the process as well. I'll certainly be reaching out to archxangel should things get annoying in the future or on the road. As for gigs, the first one is in Montreal in Pointe Claire at Calistoga Bar and Grill, after that it's in Algonquin Park in Ontario, and then off to Equinox Cruises in mid July. I know we have some more for Quebec and Ontario, but nothing else has been confirmed as of yet. We're hoping to get more of the Cruise action going, and have already been contacted by Royal Caribbean. Let's hope it works out. Best part about cruise gigs is that i barely have any gear to bring. Just sticks, pedal, and my computer tablet. Drums, hardware and cymbals are all provided. But i may bring my cymbals as well. Going on a cruise for a whole week and performing only twice is the type of gigs that we all dream of getting! LOL !Yes Sir
