Trying to date and restore my Camco Kit Last viewed: 7 hours ago

Loading...

I have an Oaklawn Kit (12X8, 13X10, 16X16, 22"bd, no matching snare). It has the oval shaped badges, walnut finish, and 3-ply shells. I have narrowed the date to from'62-'72. I have owned it for about 20 years, and have tried to leave it alone as much as possible, just doing light cleaning. A previous owner, unfortunately, made a few modifications that I'm sure affect value. The rack tom mounting system has been changed, and there are the beginnings of an internal mic system for the toms. Can anyone help with more info on the date and possible value? And tips on what to do about modifications, restorations, etc.

Really great kit Truitt. The Camco experts like Dolfan will be by soon to answer questions for you. I am sure there will be plenty on this site that will bemoan the upgraded hardware as that does impact the value, however, these drums were being used and they needed hardware that was reliable. The Camco mounts were never particularly good. What modifications were made to implement an internal mic system?

See the parallel thread on the oval badge kit I'm selling in Australia......but in short the oval badges were only around 1969 - 1971 regardless of what you might read elsewhere (one quite famous vintage drum book has them 1962 - 72 and that's just wrong - a lot of people quote that book).

The mods will have a negative effect on price and the fairly conventional sizes will count against it but it's still a very valuable, rare drum kit - just not as valuable as the more prized jazz sizes or the rarer large sizes.

Tnsquint -- I'm attaching some pics of the mic ports. They are only on the 13" and 16".

Antipodes -- Thank you! Date range is much appreciated...

Oh man, in drum collection terms, that's major damage and moves these well into the area of "player".

Anyone who gets them will probably be taking those mike ports out, refilling the holes then wondering how the hell to match the lacquer stain.

You might find you're down not far above the $1000 mark.

But, again, vagaries of the market. If you can find someone willing to live with the damage because they want a player Camco kit, you might have a buyer. They're great sounding drums no matter what.

Or just keep them, knowing you've got one of the best kits ever made.

I love the oval badge! Very cool kit! Antipodes (David) is correct on the years. It's still a guess but it's a good one! Value wise I'd say a strong $900 as a player's kit. At first view I thought the walnut didn't look original. And after seeing the pic of the white interior I bet that kit was originally a wrap. However I have seen factory lacquer exterior with white interiors and factory wrap with clear interiors so it's not a 100% fool proof method for determining original finishes.

If they were mine I'd bring the tom mount back to original, fill the holes and re-wrap the kit in black! I'd leave the mic holes as is and play the crap out of them!

Enjoy your pot of gold you just found at the end of the rainbow!
