Dude like I been doing this BR thing on the rims for about a month or more now, You know Buddy`s playing very well, ya I gave in and try Jazz now, anyway a lot of the things he does I`m learning and improving on by practice practice and it comes to me. But I`m not getting the rim work well at all, I got his first gear speed and second second gear speed but when he does the whirlwind thing, just before he goes off the rim onto the head, he hits a real light but very fast tapping, like a third gear speed. You know what I mean ? I can do the first and second gear speeds but for the life of me I can`t hit that third gear.

I`m reaching out to you or anyone else as I have tried everything I can think of, Squeezing the sticks, going too light, not twisting the wrist and coming down flat, hitting the other stick, crouching over, bending the wrist down, what else is there ? I hold them the drum way so I`m in the draw now,...In time I`ll nail most of it but I can`t seem to get that last third gear speed. I watched and watched him, copied and copied but What am I not doing ? Even the two little finger thing don`t get that speed.

HEEEEEELP please.

Nobody can play like Buddy! The closet guy I've seen is Dick Cully and even he can't match Buddy's speed.

I`m right there on the transbrake,..wound up and when I let go I`m close, very close, He got to be doing one more step, I tried to put shoulders in to it too, Lighter stick , hit'n the fold on the flange inside, I tried everything I can think of. Somebody has to know by now how to put that two speed tranny into third.

Thanks for that name, I will watch him too. In this video, I got that, all of that,..just working on fluidity of it, practice will cure that, it`s that damn rim speed thing I can`t get. Buddy holds them almost vertical but I can do it flat or dropping "the boom" while twisting the wrist. I try vertical and using the little fingers on both sticks, but that don`t work either. If I nail that last gear on the rim, All I have left is that impossible roll to finish, I can live without doing that part because close is good enough on that.

It took me a month to learn how to open and close the thumb to keep the bounce going, I`m not real good at the fluid part but I can do it, so practice cures that but at 549 of this video is the gear on the rim I can`t hit. That`s almost like spinning the wheel of fortune really really fast.

Close isn't good enough for that gear, you need to be in that gear.

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

OddBall! Be happy that you can come close! As others have stated, no one can play like Buddy! His fluid motion approach to his playing hasn't been duplicated by anyone! Yes, I've seen Dick Culley videos. He's good! But seeing him in person, or on video, can't duplicate Buddy's given talent! Even those world-renown drummers that have played with the BR Big Band, while excellent, just can't do justice to Buddy's fluid movements! Just my opinion...and I'm sticking to it!! LoLoLoLo

I got him beat on the HH, I don`t do the fingers under yet, because I`m quick with a stick, but I aint giving up on fluid talent that he had, I got most of his rim stuff, easy, like him, He`s got a third gear I can`t find.

I got the single BD speed as well and would crush him with the double single pedal BD`s. I`ve been playing without vocals 99% of my life. I got a decent bass guitar and had a killer lead for a while.

I don`t think I ever saw Buddy play in a band with vocals. Did He ?

I refuse to stand fast and accept I might not ever,....Charge or it wont get done.

One key to playing like that is don`t look at what you`re doing. It`s hard but turn off the light till you can. Those three finger under the Right stick are also a key, the back one separates the notes more the front finger gives you short notes and speed.

I`m using a Phonic D-555- 5.5" I think his slingerland BD and tom were his best sound and the Ludwig snare and FT were the other, He should have played SONOR. And I`m sticking to that lol.
