To canister or not to canister Last viewed: 43 minutes ago

From tnsquint

Un-air conditioned tour busses and rotary phones were good enough for Buddy as well, but that wouldn't work for me. I would agree that the canister throne has come and gone. If I wanted one (and I don't) it would not require serious carpentry skills to make one. You could choose the diameter, the height, the type of throne cushion, etc. Kurt, nice looking kits!

Plus 1 there...

I've never owned one. I have used 'em a couple times though. I didn't like 'em. Even when I was a kid, I would change the height of my throne every once in a while, between sets normally. My back said that was a good idea for me. Now, thousands of years later, I sing praises to the up and down handle on my big, four legged, DW throne.

I wouldn't trade that thing, except for another one.

Now, after all that, I do have to add this:

A drum kit displayed with a matching canister, new or not, home brew (done well) or factory, ups the mojo and cool factor immeasurably!

I use one on a regular basis. It is not too high, but then I am 6'2". I actually find it comfortable and puts the player in a better ergonomic position for playing.

I have used it for a couple of hours at a time and found it no less comfortable than my roc-n-soc.

Here's the one I have currently set up...

I sat on one once... I'm 5'9" so I felt like a toddler in a high chair. I would need big wooden blocks on the bass pedal and high hat in order to play. I think we all agree though that they sure look cool for display purposes behind a matching set.

I thought about making one for my WMP Rogers set, but with a 14" diameter, wouldn't you need a piece of wrap 44" x 24"? And just curious, but has anyone ever seen a cannister throne in chrome? I have a buddy with a mint COW Slingerland set, and a matching cannister would look incredible.

Good point re the blocks under the pedal. I do use Rogers swivo pedals with the one piece foot boards. That actually elevates them about an inch or so.

Slightly off topic, but I've recently started practicing by sitting on a weighted stability ball.

It might not work for anyone who needs to do intricate pedal work, but I've noticed that it adds a certain bounce to my playing (seriously), although I don't think I'm ready yet to integrate it into band rehearsals.

It's definitely tightening up my core a bit.

I honestly love Canister thrones, I gig with one and take it to jams. I put a handle on mine and actually put all my hardware in it (it's all flat based stuff). It's actually lighter to carry than my hardware bag filled up with all the stands and throne. Is it the most comfortable throne in the world? Absolutely not, I practice with a roc n soc and that's miles ahead. But if I'm just playing for a few hours it doesn't bother me.

I ordered a Ludwig silver sparkle back in 2011. I didn't realize how much my drums were faded until I got it. Here it is ready for a gig, I had 2 snare stands, 2 cymbal stands, a hi hat stand and a speed king in it.

When I'm not gigging I use it to put stuff on next to me like brushes or a metronome or my iPod. Here it is next to my stencil kit and as you can see my throne is the same height as it.
