Thermogloss refinish

Loading...

Hi all,

I appreciate any and all help in this matter. I am looking to match the 13" tom on the bottom with the sanded 12" tom above it as best as I can with a sealer or lacquer. Any have experience working with the "thermogloss" nitro lacquer? Thanks again and I plan on doing this outdoors...

NITROcellulose laquer was used in the early 70's and is called Thermogloss because Ludwig used to heat the lacquer just before it was to be used. It is a very volatile product and not easy to use, hence ludwig moved to maple cortex wrap later round. This is maybe the best way to achieve that finish

Tedious work indeed but if that is what you want you got it.

The thing with thermogloss is that it changes color with age to a amber hue. I would try to test on a piece of wood with golden oak stain and then use regular spray lacquer 5 or 6 coat with 1200 light sanding and the end and buffing ( like a car )

Take a rag and Wipe it down with some Danish / Tung oil. Let it sit overnight. It will darken it a little and bring out the grain. If it matches Then clear lacquer it. If it's not dark enough, wipe it down again. One wipe should match the other one pretty close.

Thanks so much guys!!! I will now be able to complete my Ringo rooftop kit! I will still probably paint the interiors with white wall primer as well. Thanks

Nope, but it certainly looks like a standard badge in that photo.
