The Great Black North is done!

Loading...

This kit was, as you can see from the first pics, pretty nasty when I found it, but it was essentially all there, and I needed a project, so I deemed it worthy of restoring.

It is one of the North kits made in Italy by MTI so the shells are injection molded resin (I think?) rather than fiberglass like the early US made ones. They must be pretty durable, because this kit has some serious dings and gouges from being transported by mean people. I contemplated having them painted by an auto body shop, but the estimates I got from local shops were much more than I had hoped, so I did the best I could using automotive detailing products, and elbow grease.

I am still trying to adjust the rack mounts to my liking, but they sound good, crazy loud, but in a good way.

Thanks OddBall!

They look fantastic from 10 feet away, up close you can see the road rash, but in the end, I'm really glad I saved the original finish.

Thanks grantro and Michael.

I put myself thru a few years of college working as an auto detailer for a used car lot. It was a sweet gig, the lot specialized in sports cars, mostly Corvettes, and the detail shop was across town, so I got to drive them back and forth. I made a habit of hitting the drive thru at any fast food places with cute girls working. Based on my success rate with the ladies during those years...it's not the car.

The red Evans heads do look cool. It was my attempt to make them blend in with the black and red cheerleader decor on the girls side of the basement, in hopes that they will let me leave them set up there...you know, my side has "too many drums" already yada yada yada

Mr. Toast, the kit looks amazing! I absolutely love concert tom kits, and yours is one of the prettiest I’ve seen. How do the Evans Red Hydraulic’s sound on the kit? I’ve always mostly seen concert toms with the standard Clear or Coated single ply heads on them.

The Evans Hydraulics sound great to me, but I have no point of reference. The kit was so shabby when I got it that I immediately broke it down for cleaning. This is the first and only North kit I've played. I originally was leaning toward black dot heads, but my daughters helped me make a style over substance choice to match the cheerleader decor.

The red heads did tune up super easy. I guess when there is no reso head to find harmony with, you can really hear the shell's resonance more prominently. The fact that there are 4 rack toms is also a new thing for me...hitting that 6 inch cleanly will take some practice.

You know for a north kit that’s as nice as they get great job

April 2nd 1969 scarfed pink champagne holly wood and 65/66 downbeat snare, and , supra same year very minty kit old pies
66/67 downbeat with canister
Super 400 small round knob
1967 super classic obp

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Thanks Jaghog!

I have absolutely no need for a big loud kit like that, but it was a fun project. After I'm done goofing around on them for a while, I'll hopefully find a home for them where they will get played out, and spend their nights blowing people's hair back like they were designed to do.
