The cost of restoring our vintage drums!

I feel your pain. My first vintage kit started with the purchase of a 1958 22/13/16 Slingerland WMP kit for $650. 10 correct Ts and claws and two 13" COB sticksaver hoops probably cost me another $150. Then came a matching 1958 Super Gene Krupa snare was $300, plus about $150 for some correct parts. New heads were probably $150 as well. Period correct hardware was $200-250 (I got a great deal on cymbal stands). Then the crowning glory was the matching canister throne for which I paid $440 for. So, all told, I put over $2,000 in that kit. However, I did OK by trading for a mid-40s RK kit that used to belong to Barrett Deems. But, I still miss the 58s.By the way, Mark, your 15" FT looks amazing. Enjoy it!Lynn

This is our biggest problem parts ! And people selling drums don't realize how expensive and hard to find missing parts when you tell them why you can't pay there price , or low ball so much that's the hard cold facts that's why I limited my purchases to complete drums or if it's rare and missing a few I can go with it , but no bottom hoops and t rods is bad enough...let alone strainers wires etc...

Unless it something really "special", any project I take on nowadays has to have at all or at least most of the pieces there. I tend to shy away from re-wraps, missing wood bass drum hoops, missing tom mounts etc. because those parts can add up fast and turn a $250 "good deal" kit into a $500 "I spent more than it's worth" kit.

Like many of us, I don't do it for the money. I don't think about resale value. It's for the love and passion and therapy of it. But I have learned to be wiser and not overspend on a project to the point of not making financial sense.

I remember the thought I had over 4 years ago when I bought my Star kit. "My gosh, it's so cheap!!" But, several shipments of lugs, rods, badges, cymbal attachments later it is not so cheap. And I am NOT adding it up.

But, like others have said, it's just so much fun to bring these instruments back to life. And to look back and say, yeah, I did this. And then to get to play it ... someday.

You're very welcome for the compliment! The drum, and your work to make it the beauty it is now, is deserving.
