Tama HC52F Classic Stand-Just like Vintage Ludwig 1400's-In Depth Photos & Specs

Loading...

Greetings,

I recently purchased one of these, and it is so similar to the vintage Ludwig 1400's that I thought I would share photos and specs for everyone. Since I can only attach 5 photos per thread, I"ll do this thread for the base section-then two replies: one for the middle section and one for the top section. I hope this helps you and that you enjoy looking at these photos. I'm sure that Peter Erskine gave Tama one of his old Ludwig 1400's and told Tama to copy it, without getting "in trouble". Tama nailed it, and I'll think you'll agree.

The Base Section (Going in photo order below from left to right):

The base section legs looks nearly identical. Change out the rubber feet and wing screw and I don't think anyone would notice.

Instead of the "raised dot" or "raised bump" that Ludwig used to "stop" the legs from unfolding any further, Tama uses a roll pin or tension pin tightly fitted to the main shaft. That seems way more secure to me, and won't get worn down with constant set ups like the Ludwigs did.

The length of the legs from the center shaft is just over 10 inches, just like the old Ludwigs. Tama really nailed this! So many others, like Gibraltar for example, didn't realize that the legs don't need to be five feet long!

Tama has a different (and better) take on the metal insert that is the "go between" of the wing screw and middle tube. It doesn't go as far around as the old Ludwig metal inserts, but it is much thicker top to bottom, which seems better to me.

The height of the base section (when the legs are fully extended), from the floor to the top is just shy of 19", again just like the old Ludwigs.

The Middle Section (again, going from left to right on the pictures below):

It is 17" long, from top to bottom (just like the Ludwigs......man, did Tama get it right!)--(Sorry the photo is upside down. My phone randomly flips pictures 180 degrees. I rotate them when I download them to my computer, then I re-save them. They appear fine to me, but somehow when they are uploaded they revert back to upside down. Weird).

The bottom of the middle section has a plastic piece inserted in it. I think this is to reduce vibration.

Again, just like the old Ludwigs, Tama does not use a metal insert at the top part of the middle section, it screws directly into the "solid rod" top section (more on that below).

You can see how compactly the whole thing folds up when it is telescoped into itself (just like the old................you know where I'm going with this!). Full length of about 25".

The Top Section (going left to right with the pictures):

Does that tilter piece look familiar to anyone? An EXACT copy of the Ludwig 1400! Even the way it's affixed on!

A view of the gear part of the tilter. Again, change out the wing screw and you couldn't tell the difference!

There is a rubber ring toward the bottom of the top section. Again, I think this is to reduce vibration.

The top section is solid (not a hollow tube) and I believe it is the exact same dimensions diameter wise as the old Ludwigs, but I haven't tested it yet to be 100% sure, but I believe it is. It is 17" from the end to the base of the tilter (Tama REALLY did their homework, eh?).

A close-up view of the tilter seat section. It's just under 1 3/4". Literally the only difference is the threads are 8 mm and not 1/4". Tama includes two thinner felts and a short, white neoprene sleeve. This is another nod to the past. I'm glad they didn't put one of their reversible, dual post sleeves on it. It comes with a round, plastic wing nut, but it could easily be swapped out to any 8 mm wing nut.

Tama hit a grand slam with this stand, and I trust many of you would agree.

I hope you find this thread useful, educational and/or entertaining.

Thanks!

V

die cast wing bolts look too big but otherwise, it's nice.

Tama did an excellent job with not only these cymbal stands, but the bass drum pedal and matching hi hat. If I didn't have matching hardware to go with my vintage kits, I'd be using these Tama stands and pedals.

As to the wing bolt, yes, it does look a bit too big, but not a deal breaker to me!
