Swiv-o-matic Plate Types

Loading...

I have a 20" Tower bass drum and according to the catalog, it comes with the following collet plates:

360 - Shell mount for side mounting tom (this is due to the center mounted lugs

331 - Shell mount for angle mounting disappearing cymbal holder

When looking at each, I can see one has a longer distance from the plate base and where the threads start. This allows the collet nose to properly thread on all of the way and tension the hex rod. The other appears to have a shorter distance between the base plate and the threads, so I can not thread the collet nose without the ears hitting the top of the carriage bolt. According to the catalogs, there was only one type of collet nose, so why is this happening? I tried original machined, original cast and new repo collet noses and they all hit the carriage bolt. Is it possible the extension piece with the threads was bent by being dropped? If so, should I just give it a couple knocks with a hammer?

Actually, after typing all of this I just realized when the collet plate with the issue is mounted in the cymbal arm position, the hex cymbal arm hits the side of the shell, stops and doesn't go into the bass drum. I might have just answered my own question, but I'm still interested in other opinions. :o

Thanks,

Tim

Last night I looked closer at the collet plate and it does appear to be bent or indented. I'm guessing the bass drum was dropped, which caused the collet to become bent. I tried to straighten it out, but it's almost impossible without damaging the rest of the collet.

I guess I'll just replace it. Off to the Wanted section.

Tim post a picture please. I think I have a spare plate but not sure what angle it is. If it's what you need you can have it. I'll dig it out and post a pic.

Here are some picture of my existing collet plate. Notice the red boxes that shows the area, which is crimped and hitting the carriage bolt.

It looks as if it got modified somewhere along the line. It might have sheared off at the interface between the plate and neck, and then was rewelded. It's either that or it factory defective. One thing is for sure, it never would have worked the way it is now.

Thanks for the feedback. Something has obviously altered my collet.

According to the catalog, there were only three types of collets:

Straight - #310 (center/top position)

Angle - #311 (left or right position)

Short Angle - #312 (off-center/left or right position)

Here's the Comet kit in the 1967 catalog:

Notice the angle of the cymbal arm and the collet plate. Mine is literally pointing straight up, so it's not correct and it will never work the way it is now. Looks like I need a replacement.

That first one is not bent. Normal configuration.
