Sunset Satin Flame drums

I recently purchased a 4 pc (no snare) 1968 Gretsch set in Sunset Satin Flame. I paid a little too much for them because I let sentiment cloud my judgement....I'm okay with it so far. I bought a kit identical to this one new in 1969 but with a metal snare at that time - those drums are long gone (sold in 1976).

These drums have a wickedly bad tom hanger - heavy and just a bit of a bear to adjust. The bass drum satin finish has spider cracks from where the tom hanger plate is bolted down.

I'm sort of over my sentiment about having these drums so I was thinking......in order to make this a nice 'player's' kit I would install a Rail Mount. The sad thing here too is that Gretsch mounted the tom hanger plate on this bass drum crooked.....a horrible job. Makes this kit even more rare now huh Lame

The Sunset finish has what looks to be bleach spots splattered on it in a few places. I thought it was maybe some paint or something I could clean off but no matter what I use it stays there.

I know....it's a rare finish, but the finish is no where near good to excellent condition. But, it doesn't have any large cracks, pieces missing or it's not lifting/separating from the shells. However, I'm really tempted to refinish the drums along with plugging the diamond plate bass drum tom hanger holes.

The Sunset Satin Flame Rock n' Roll kit of 1967-1970 (not pictured in this finish in any catalogs.....only mentioned in print in the 67 catalog) came with two 8x12 toms.....not an 8x12 and 9x13 as most two tom outfits have. My 69 kit had this set up as does the 68 setup I now have.

They are beautiful sounding drums that include a 20" bass and a 16 floor tom.

I would be willing to sell the drums - as is - to anyone that would want to have them to preserve the Sunset Satin Flame finish.

PM or email me if there is interest.

Sorry for the poor lighting - the drums are closer to the colour in the two photos showing the crooked diamond plate tom mount on the bass drum.

Photos showing some warts:

The white stains on the floor tom

The spider cracks near the bass drum diamond tom mount plate (mostly at the top)

The very badly mounted diamond plate tom mount.

I know I'd never get even close to my money back on these if I decided to sell them after refinishing and changing the bass drum mount - which may include repairing the mount holes if the drums were to be naturally finished. Could cover the holes if wrapped.

But the drums would be a whole lot prettier refinished. It's just such a hard call because of the rare finish even though there is some damage.

Love them as they are Kona

redoing those would really be a shame

Clean what can be and do not sweat the rest

They really do look great. Any chance of elongating a couple of the holes on the bass mount to center it properly? I did one like that with nice results. It was driving me crazy.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess....in the end....they are nice drums and a bit of a rarity (Sunset finish) and I should be happy to own them..............'Worts n' all :)

Mike, I might just try doing that with the plate if it looks like it'd work.

Perking them them up bit as in re-painting the bass drum hoop in that good ole Nitrocellulose Gloss lacquer wouldn't hurt.

Back to the white marks - mostly on the floor tom......it looks like someone spilt some very strong bleach....splashed it on the finish. You can't notice it much when the lights are on the kit - as in this photo.....you're too dazzled by that Satin finish haha.

It's a real botch job on the mount... but when set up.. if you didn't know then it's not even noticeable...

Nice wrap... I'd use satin enamel on the hoops....

Cheers

John

They look great to me. The off center mount isn't going to effect anything other than the mathematical eye. Clean them up a little, retouch the hoops maybe. But I'm sure they sound great and have a nice funky look. Best!

Some scrubbing bubbles on the finish and this kit will have no trouble finding a happy home.
