This will be up and running in no time. Looks like a good one! How bad are the edges? Out of round at all?

The shells are not obviously out of round.

I am a little worried about the bottom of the floor tom. My camera situation is weak right now but if I can get some decent pictures of the bottom I could use some advice on exactly what tack to take on that drum. It's rough and delaminating some. Cooked Egg

Looks like a great project!

Looking at your last two pictures, here's what I would do with the resonant side edges on the FT as an alternative to try instead of having new edges cut:

1) (Assuming there's a little separation of the plies at the seam -- if not, ignore this step) Force some wood glue or Elmer's glue into the separation and clamp tight -- be sure to wipe the excess clean with a wetted wipe (rag or paper towel).

2) After that dries (I'd let it go overnight), mix up a small portion of Rock Hard Water Putty (available at just about any hardware store) and fill in the dings and gouges in the bearing edge, forming the putty as close to the form of the edge as possible. The gouges look rough enough (from the pictures) to hold the putty fine (the putty is kinda like paint -- it won't stick to smooth surfaces real well, so the gouges will need a little "texture."). Wipe away all excess putty. (BTW -- Evidently, Slingerland used a process similar this this right at the factory, as I've had Slingerland drums show up here that had putty-type of patches on bearing edges. Quite frankly this experience with older Slingys is what gave me the idea to do this in the first place!!)

3) By hand, smooth out the patches with sand paper (120 grit will work). Understand this is a slow process and takes time and patience.

4) repeat 2) & 3) above if necessary.

BTW -- On the lifting seams, I've had some success by pealing back the wrap just a little and forcing in some super glue OR on occasions I've been able to put some of the double-faced tape under the flap (& clamp down overnight). This will work as long as the wrap isn't real brittle... 'cause if it is it will easily break when you're trying to lift it up. IF it's brittle, you can still usually force some glue in, and then clamp (BTW -- I clamp with a 1x2 on it's edge along the seam and simple C-clamps on the ends. I also always put down a "barrier" of blue painter's tape along the seam so if any comes out it comes out on the tape. I hope that made sense -- no pics available at this time!).

Hope this helps a little. Again, looks like a great project!

MichaelWray... That Chris White is a very practical and smart guy... and he loves to talk vintage drums... we probably spent 45 minutes just looking over the consignment kits. What a great resource to have so close.

Billnvick... your advice matched Chris'... give repairing a shot before you go to recutting.

So I will re-bond any delamination.... put on the putty and clean up the edges and see if they tune OK. If not... then we recut.

The wrap repair is what is scaring the crap out of me... Chris said to CAREFULLY take loose the full edge.. CAREFULLY lift it, clean it, contact cement it and put it back down. If I crack it I'm screwed.. so that is freaking me out a little.

Well we'll see how it goes....
