From Purdie Shuffle

Jeff - don't close out the thread just yet. I'd like to post pix of the completed kit once the snare drum is added to it. -Then- when the project is finished/complete and the photos of it all set-up are posted, Jumping2 you can bring it on home. Scott - which background snare did you refer to as a 'custom Supra'? There are 7 snares back there! (16 total in the house...) the three that are displayed on stands are an; 80's Ludwig 6.5"x14" Hammered Aluminum Supraphonic, 84' Ludwig 5"x14" Hammered Bronze Supraphonic and a 'home-made' 6.5"x14" 3-ply mahogany Super-Sensitive that I built myself. Which one were you referring to when you said, 'That custom Supra in the background would be perfect with the kit.'Just curious which one you are talking about.John

I meant "super sensitive" and not "supra" referring to the uber cool custom snare you built a while back. It's funny looking at photos from forum members and seeing things in the background thinking "I know that drum!"

As always, you should try to understand what I mean to type and not what I actually type. Cooked Egg

> "I know that drum!"

That is one of the nice features of being a member here! Happens to me too, "Oh, that's so and so's Camco kit," or, "that's so and so's snare drum." Being fascinated by and taking note of, really cool tubs that others own is an expression of our own deep love for our 'instrument of choice'... drums.

We're drummers, we see cool drums and because of the way our brains are wired, seeing cool drums activates our salivary glands and we drool on our keyboards. It's just drummers doing the same thing with drums that guitar players do with cool guitars; who owns/plays a 57' Strat, or a Gibson Gold Top, or violinists with; who owns/plays a Stradivarius. We are hard-wired to respond to cool drums!

If I was going to pick a temporary snare drum candidate for this 'refurbed' Club Date kit, it would be the hammered bronze supra! The bronze shell would not only match the wood well, that snare drum is one of the best I own sound-wise. The wood Super-Sensitive would be a great choice for jazz I think. For the stuff I play on a kit I need a snare with a bit more balls and versatility than the SS can give me.

Good choice though. I love that drum!

John, your snare drum is about done. Here is a shot of it with level sealer. One topcoat of gloss and we are done. Ship tomorrow.

Those are looking great. I have to say that bass drum is beautiful with the inlay on those hoops. Just takes it to another level on top of how nice the drums look anyway. Can't wait to see the whole set up. What if you used maple snare hoops with a small strip inlay to match the bass drum.

I want to reassemble/restore the snare drum to the Jazz-Fest that it is. I love J-fests for their great sound, I wouldn't want to alter it too far from original anyway. Besides, if I mess around with wood hoops on the snare, it'll kill the whole 'vintage-vibe' look that the kit has now. I envisioned a 'new-looking' old kit with a heavy 'antique/vintage' vibe. Combining these drums and hardware with Jeff's woodworking skills has produced a real one-of-a-kind gem. I'm real happy with them. Can't wait to add the snare. I've been playing these exclusively for a couple of weeks and I'm having big fun with them. The calf heads on the toms sound great. Punchy, powerful bass drum. The extra ply of mahogany that Jeff added only made these drums sound warmer.

10 mil, and I bought a 4x8 sheet. It did all the drums, actually the floor tom I did twice DOH. I have enought left to wrap a couple snares and another 9x13. I did not like this veneer, it was too thick and very hard to bend. My kits I used a paper backed veneer and it bent real easy, you could roll it up into a 4" diameter tube with no effort. Johns veneer was solid mahogany, no paper back and it was more expensive. I wanted to get the best quality since it was for some one paying for my service. Well it is the best but hard to work with, next time I would get the paper back veneer again.

Thank you!
