FFR428 did some experiments with paint removal using a solvent that they use for cleaning printing press equipment. YOu might give him a shout. Il see if I can find the thread, Im pretty sure its called "painted wrap test"

Thanks guys. I found the thread. I should've looked first but I hadn't recalled reading about a painted satin wrap and at the same time, I was hoping to get some info on the drum since I'm a Sonor dummy.

It`s most of a mid to late 60`s and yes, it`s beech !i T-rods are like Champion series but the slot is smaller. Ft tom legs should be straight !i

I can`t tell if the mallet shafts go to the edge of the badge or if they stop just short !i

Some kinda graffiti remover might work !i

Thanks Oddball, I knew you'd chime in. The mallet shafts stop just short about 3/32nds. Camera flash really brings out the scuffs & scratches. Those are some fat t-rods too. Good stuff. Good idea with the graffiti remover.

Years ago I acquired some Slingerlands from around 1970 in white satin flame which an earlier owner Rocket Scientist had painted over in a similar manner. I decided to test just a small place with some "Goof-Off" brand paint/glue remover liquid solvent. I wet a cotton ball and gently 'touched' it to a spot that had black paint all over it. There was a sudden "flash" and a "crackling" sound running the full circumference of the drum shell - and instantaneously the entire satin flame covering burned to crispy crinkly white ash with a paper like backing. It was a chemical reaction to the solvent. I'll never again waste time on those finishes once they're painted over. Unless someone here knows a foolproof way to clean that stuff up I would keep the drum as is, or completely remove all the covering and recover it along with some other orphaned Sonor shells to make a full match kit. Amazing what some people did to their cool equipment isn't it?!

That's why I was checking here. to see if anyone had a solution. I got similar results on a test drum in SF before taking a product to some paint splatters on another drum in SF. I ended up just carefully scraping the paint away with a Craftsman dental type tool. Kinda felt like an archaeologist cleaning a fossil.

I still need to get back to this. The test worked well on some paints but not very well on others. But still have more things to try.

I was looking at a satin finish floor tom painted black at the time. The seller used a 3M product but I can't remember what it was. It was slowly taking the paint off. I think it was a fine plastic polish or compound. I had a few PM's at DFO with him and some pics. But those are gone now I just looked. And I forget who the seller was also. Not much help here sorry.
