Oh...and just wait until you see some of the other things I did to the kit...lets just say I painted some art work on the shells...that is going to have to come off of there! Yes...I'll get some pics up...

You can remove the paint off the lugs if you feel they are good enough to still use. Motsenbockers "Lift Off" Grafitti remover sold at Home Depot etc..... does a great job and does not harm the chrome plating underneath the paint. This is some of my stuff that was spray painted silver. Before and after...........

Gambles, you are not crazy.

I have found it fun to take a beat up trashed thing and turn it into something fun to look at and use.

Being sentimental and respectful also comes into play.

Lots of guys here to walk you through the steps.

Try to save all the hardware.

Price increases greatly in this area.

Or, Go all out if you can. ($)

Don't forget before and after pics.

Lets see what shape your kit is in. Pic time.

Part 2

This Star parts catalog shows the consolette...

The bass drum claws also match this catalog ad:

So, I'm going to assume that this kit was made by Star? If not correct me...just a guess!

I've already done all the stuff to the kit that I mentioned above...

I removed the wrap...threw away what was left of the bass drum hoop. There were never any spurs... the one spur mount was gone...the other was in bad shape...as were the floor tom legs...and rail consolette...I threw them away (which, looking back was also dumb!) plugged some of the old mount holes with hardwood dowel stock... painted the lugs black (dumb), and painted the two rims (12 & 16") I had black (also dumb), and also painted the inside of the shell black over the grey that was in the bass drum (also also dumb) and painted the inside of the toms black w/ black shoe polish (king of stupid that one!)...

So, here's what I have now... I had originally planned a pirate-themed kit...and I hand transferred and painted the logos you see...including my actual initials...and some skulls and crossbones...and just... I didn't know what I had when I bought the kit...I hadn't done any research...i was just going to restore the kit w/ no money...

Again...I'm going to make great amends with these drums...

So, here's me photos!

These are the T-Rods I do have...none of the threading in the lug inserts on this kit in ANY of the lugs matches modern threading... so, even to keep the lugs after stripping the paint would require new lug inserts for all 44 lugs. These T-Rods are kinda unusual to me...I'm not sure whom the design belongs to that they ripped off...if any...they put me in minds I think of some I had seen used on a set of Premier drums...though...don't hold me to that.

This is the hoop off of the 16" floor tom...again..no bottom hoop on either tom...just the one...I'll assume this is because of the trend that I've heard about with these MIJ kits...where..the top head breaks...pull the bottom one...never replace the bottom...etc...

It needs to be replaced! There's some pretty awful rust on this and there are places where it looks like the chroming is just gone...

This is a bag full of the washers and screws for the lugs...as well as some lug inserts and springs...there's plenty of rust and some kind of weird tarnish all over some of the metal...it's kinda white and chalky...feels kinda nasty to handle...

Part 3

This is a shot of the 12" hoop (painted black) and a cheap head I had on the drum filled with parts from the Gambles kit. Lots of rust on the tension rods...and they again do not thread into modern inserts...so...replacement is in order...

Here's a forward shot of the slingerland knock off lugs...I'll also include some more shots...again...tension rods aren't good...inserts are tarnished and very old...black paint all over the very pitted chrome of the lugs...

Here's some of the lugs I didn't get painted...LOTS of pits and it looks like I've managed to remove a LOT of rust as well...some tarnish to these...but mostly pits!

Part 4

One of these lugs is absolutely got something funky going on with the chrome...like an oxidized discoloration or something? and again...pits...

These are the bass drum lugs...most of them just have a bunch of pits...not much rust...and of course BLACK PAINT! AHHHH!

The claws from the backside show a lot of rust and places where the chrome is flaking off...and there's some discoloration...

Front View...One of these got the black paint as well...

Part 5

These are the fl tom brackets...they're already for sale on ebay...theres just a lot of pitting on these...and a little tarnish on the key-screws...

Here's the inside of the basss drum shell...you can clearly see the gray paint where the plates for the consolette were...apparently I didn't remove this to pain the interior black...this will be getting sanded and a ply of maple added to the inside. This goes the same for the tom toms...the old spur-mount holes will be getting threaded air vents put into them...for a total of three vents on the bass drum...or at least that's what I'm planning!

This is a shot of the bearing edge of the bass drum...I don't know for sure if anyone has actually cut edges or if they've just been rounded over...I'm greatly contemplating having new edges cut after adding reinforecement rings...though...don't get me wrong...these are very sturdy feeling drums...despite the thin shell they're quite like...hard feeling...I dunno if maybe the wood has cured after 40+ years of drying...

Here's the exterior of the bass drum...the cymbal mount was removed and the holes plugged as the mount had the key screw broken off in the mount...it was also very corroded and had chrome flaking off of it... The shell is in good shape...try to ignore the artwork I had added...it's going to be sanded off here soon...as you can see I test sanded to see how hard it would be to get the clearcoat off of there...

Part 6

Now for the toms...

Firstly the FL tom...the bearing edges are in about the same state...there's a bit of a spot where the out ply is seperating but it really isn't too bad...there's maybe an 1/8 inch of space at the highest point...I'm sure it'll glue back with some clamps and Titebond III.

Part 7

And now for honorable mentions...here's the 13" tom...and it has some issues...firstly, it's out of round. Secondly there's chunks out of it...and some pieces missing inside...

Here you can kinda see how the drum is out of round...

Part 8

And finally the 12"...this one is in the best shape out of the whole kit. Very solid feeling...the tom mount plate was pitched because of rust and chrome corrosion...(again, maybe not the finest idea I had here...) and the holes were filled with hard wood dowels...note that I still need to sand off the ends of said dowels inside the drum...and again, all of these drums will get a ply of maple added.

here's where the holes are filled in on the exterior of the drum...

So, yeah...that's about it for now...I'm selling some of the parts I don't want on ebay...which...so far in my mind is all of this (I'll get rid of the black paint) hardware... and I'll start fresh with all new fittings and parts...hoops...etc...

and I'm still trying to see what re-rings will cost through drumfoundry.com. If it looks feasible, then I'll first buy the maple inner plies and then the re-rings and get all of that going first...then the wrap...then parts and hardware...then heads...and so on...

thanks for checking it out...and again...ignore my artwork...it's going bye bye...
