Snare Wires

Loading...

So over on the Pearl forum a member posted two of his 1980's 8x14" snares. Both absolutely gorgeous. He also mentioned that each came with a NOS set of wires, ones that you can't find anywhere these days. For some time I have been tinkering with the idea of making hard to find snare wires to order. Since many of them aren't highly sought after, but now and again we need them. I think of my Slingerland Radioking with the extended wires. Took me a little while to find them as Puresound no longer makes them. My Tama Imperialstar King Beat I stopped bringing to shows because I know I can't find a set of wires for it. So I use my Mastercraft which thankfully has a basic set of wires just extended. Now I have two snares in my collection that at some point will need new wires. I don't see them being very hard to make, all basic elements. Little trial and error and I think I can hit it. What do you guys think? If I were to do this, do you think people would want wires made, or is this just a crazy fantasy?

I attached a photo of the NOS wires.

I don't know how you'd go about it, but I say give it a shot! I'd be very curious...

My thought was this. I can easily cut the small pieces of metal for the tabs, drill holes for snare cord. Most wires I've seen look to be soldered, so that too simple enough. What I need to figure out is what exactly is used for the wire ( brass, aluminum, copper ) and then just a matter of twisting the proper way. Certainly gonna be a trail and error process. It might not be a bad idea to see if I can locate the patent on when metal snare wires were introduced.

Might not sell like hotcakes all the time BUT I know some are looking for obsolete snare wires no longer in production. Custom 1 offs. Like for the older RK clamshell that uses the hooks to hold wires to them. Nice touch would be the end pieces that look exact to original. But think most would be super happy to get custom snare wires that fit and work as spec.

FFR428 raises a good point. If you work out how to do it, then you've got yourself a serious business idea - custom snare wires for vintage drums. Holy Flaming Arseholes, Batman! Mind Blowi

I thought this may be a gem of an idea, been sitting with it for a little while now. I know I'm not gonna sell a million wires, but it would be nice if everyone had a go to place for those hard to find strands.

I like the sound of that though " Custom Wires for Vintage Drums "
