Slippery sticks

Loading...

I have an unusual issue, my hand palms do not sweat at all. As a result my sticks have excellent grip until they start to get a bit greasy because that happens when you play and hold your sticks. Then they get slippery and that makes you use your hand-muscles completely wrong causing all kinds of little pains.

I tried to clean my sticks with soap or an alcoholic based cleaning-gel. I also tried to moisten my hands but that works only temporary. In the end starting to use a new pair is the only satisfying solution.

I used gloves in the past but I hate that. Any suggestions how to keep the sticks in a clean, non-slippery condition?

Thank you!

Hand towel... wipe and play... wipe and play. :D Wipe em down between numbers when you can.

*Important: If that hand pain is only associated with slippery sticks then ok, that can be remedied. If the hand pain is something that occurs regularly then, A. you may need to have that looked at by a doctor, or B. (and the most likely candidate,) you need to recheck your technique from top to bottom. Beginning with how you are sitting/body position, how you hold the sticks, ergonomics, how your kit is set up, in other words, back to basics. I've been playing pain free for over 50 years. If you want to be playing when you're an old phart, fix/correct whatever may be wrong with your technique now, before you injure yourself permanently.

Welcome to the forum.

John

PS - I thought it was funny that your hands don't sweat, but grease and oil seems to come out of them ok. :p

I have been recently experiencing the same problem trying a new brand of sticks. I couldn't figure out why I was really sore in spots until I realized how much energy was being spent just keeping the sticks in my hands. There was a similar thread on another forum. One of the suggestions was rubbing the stick ends with beeswax. I gave it a shot and it works. Not perfect, but much better. The wax will wear off.

I also tried wrapping the ends of the sticks with some self sticking elastic wrap they use on injured animals limbs. That works, too but it is a bit more sticky than I like.

Other things that were suggested were the sticks with the dipped ends or plasti-dipping (spraying) your own sticks if your size/ shape were not offered pre-dipped.

Wanted: Pearl President floor tom in Golden Grain wrap and rack tom in Tiger Eye (root beer) wrap.

I know they make sex wax for sticks. Same stuff used on surf boards. Lasts longer than Bee wax, but has the same effect. Personally I've never had any issues such as this. But also as of late I've been using sticks from a local stick maker based in New Hampshire. Unlike the big brands his don't have that smooth clear finish and the wood is more open and able to soak up some of the sweat / grease / etc... Honestly don't think I'll ever use another stick aside from his.

Maybe give some of the Vater 'Nude' sticks a try. "The unfinished stick leaves a comfortable sanded grip that is perfect for drummers who have problems with stick slippage due to hand sweat while performing. "

Comes in 5A, 5B, Power 5B, 1A, 3A, Universal, and Fusion models.

Some sticks are too glossed with lacquer... I used to use Yamaha sticks back in the 70's.. they were a High Gloss finish and slippery... (but I worked for the importer so paid only a pittance).

I would buy in carton lots & before use I would rough them from midway back to the butt with steel wool...

Cheers

Zildjian were making sticks they called "Raw" some time ago, which were just smoothed wood, no lacquer or polish. They were perfect for non-slip. I wonder why they stopped making them...
