I have a set of Slingerland's I purchased new in late 1983 ($980.00). They have the Niles badge, and I'm wondering if they are maple shells or mahogny. I don't see an "M" stamp on the inside of the shells. The inside of the shells have a clear coating. The snare is a 61/2 X 14 chrome over brass I believe, has ten lugs, and a TDR strainer (sounds great!). A magnet does not stick to it either. I have always loved my Slingerlands. Does anyone know if these are maple or not, and if the snare is brass or not? Thanks for any help you can give. P.S. Are they considered vintage yet?

I'm pretty sure they were maple, poplar, maple, poplar, maple but I'm no shell expert! That is if yours is 5-ply which it should be from that era.
It should be a brass shell on that snare. It is probably pretty heavy
The word Vintage pretty much applies to anything not new in todays standards. The word has been tossed around for stuff from the 90's so I do not know what vintage is any more.

Thanks David....Yes, the snare is heavy. I have a pearl set with a free-floating maple snare, along with a brass Sensitone, and my Slingerland snare sounds as good or better, depending on the room I'm in. I've always been a Slingerland guy, and I wish they could get back to where they were 25-30 years ago.
