Slingerland Sound King vs. Radio King Metal Snares

Loading...

Greetings,

I just had a few questions that I'm sure you fine folks can help me with.

If you look at the attached images (which are from the 1967 Catalog), you'll see the "Gene Krupa" Sound King model and the Radio King model. It appears as though the only difference between them was the Sound King had a Zoomatic strainer and the Radio King had a Radio King strainer. Were the two models identical other than the strainers? Were they both COB?

Also, they were both available in 5" x 14" and 6.5" x 14" sizes, with either 8 or 10 lugs (giving 4 options per snare). Again, the fact they were both being offered in identical configurations makes me think the shells, lugs, tone controls etc. were the same.

In your opinion, which of these models/configurations is the most common and most rare? I'm not all that educated on these snares (hence my posting), but I would think the Sound Kings were more common than the Radio Kings, with the 6.5" depth and 10 lug configuration being the least common for each. What say you?

Thanks in advance for your help,

V

Answer to both questions is yes. Also applies to the wood shell Artist model. Radio King model has the three point strainer with bridges. Probably marketed to the "old guys" who preferred that strainer.
