Slingerland Radio King Restoration

Picked up a sweet maple single ply radio king on the bay recently

I started to remove the paint but haven't decided what to do with the shell yet. I made a poll on my website, but you could leave a reply here if you'd like.

Is it a maple shell? You should post pictures directly to this site so they will always be here. But I say natural finish or stain and and finish, no plastic wrap. Let us know how it goes!

Thank you!

Really nice drum~! Your going to love it once it back together. Was it a complete drum with the clamshell strainer and everything? I hope so those can be difficult to find. I say finish it however YOU really want it. Wrap, paint or stain make it yours. That's my vote. :) I hope to find one of those someday myself.

it was just the plain shell with no hardware.

I really wanted to get my hand on some custom abalone pearl wrap. Sadly, none of the custom drum wrap companies will/can do it...

I've got one like that!

When I got it it was a basket case with cracked, peeling yellowed WMP wrap. Someone had put a Ludwig strainer on it. It was kinda sad. I peeled the wrap off and used it for several years as it was, but those Slingy hoops would saw through sticks in no time.

A couple years ago I decided to do a retro-mod on it. I took it to a cabinet maker who sanded the shell and then sprayed on 3 coats of poly.

I used black chrome hardware and a Trick throwoff. I feel like it's the best of both worlds now. That shell is warm but loud!

Here's mine:

OSD101. Great score. You will like that drum when finished. Looks like it had large beavertail lugs. Since you have lug dents in the shell and maple bet it started out as a painted shell.

73Rogers. Nice save. Like the look. The lugs look to be exactly as what are on my Duplex snare.

Here is my maple single ply. It is currently sporting a poorly applied tint/varnish finish. This will be gone and just clear gloss applied.

Looking forward to updates!

Creighton

Are you going to look for a clamshell strainer? I'll keep a eye out if you are.

I was looking at the aftermarket larger RK beavertail lugs with the 2 1/4" bolt pattern. Besides being sold out most places it was stated they were made to fit bass drums. And would not fit toms and snares. They are taller height wise to fit bass drums easier it said. If you shell takes the larger lugs the longer BeaverTails and Streamliner use the same 2.250" spacing. The smaller BT's are 1.5". All the originals are pretty easy to find still. You'll see them in chrome and nickel finish. Oh a nice pair of stick choppers too~~!! flowers2

Cool project~!

Unless the shell is specifically drilled for a clam-shell strainer I would avoid it and find a 3-point. If you want to do an oil finish search the forum for "Maloof oil." That's what I did on my RKs and it makes the grain in the outer maple ply look fantastic. It's a simple procedure but spans several days of drying time. You wet-sand it into the wood starting with 220 grit and working your way up to 800 grit.

Some really great responses and advice, thank you.

This drum should have small beaver tail lugs, small sound king lugs will also fit this shell.

It is drilled for a clam shell strainer and has no additional holes. I will probably sit tight until I find a clam shell, (but I know how annoying they can be).
