Slingerland "festival" questions....

Loading...

Hello all,

I've been researching when festivals were first produced in the '60's.

They first appeared the 1963 catalog.

These are the first 2 sentences in the description;...

"An extremely popular, low priced chrome shelled snare drum." ..."The sturdy shell is made of solid brass......"

This description goes from 1963 to 1971 catalogs ( there were a few years they didn't print catalogs in that time frame)

In the 1973 catalog they refer to the festival as "an extremely popular chrome shell snare drum,"

So, question;...did festivals have chrome over brass shells from 1963 to 1971?

Model 136; 8 lug 5x14. Model 137; 8 lug 6.5x14

Model 138; 10 lug 5x14. Model 139; 10 lug 6.5x15

Anyone have a spare COB model 139 for sale? lol

Thanks for any input.

Interesting question. Another member and myself were just discussing this very topic earlier today. Sorry, cannot report anything concrete, just theories at this point. Does anyone have a 60's 'Festival'? Brass shell or steel shell.

edit 11/2022: The "Festival" model did indeed have a chrome over BRASS shell throughout the 60's and into the early 70's. No line shell through '63, three line shell '64 onward. Change to the no line STEEL shell occurred in early 70's. Newer research validates this.

I have a brass one no bearing edges, sharp like a razor blade and i only found out because of this thread. i always assumed that it was steel. Thanks.

Keep fixing them up...

The early COB shells had a 180 degree fold for a bearing edge... The later steel shells had a conventional "Sound King" type bearing edge. There are reported instances where Sound King shells were used to build Festivals during times of shortage of available stock..

Cheers

drumfx, can you post a few pictures of your 60's 'Festival' model? Shell, strainer, bearing edge and badge please.
