Slingerland Niles Hollywood Ace Snare- Need tone control advice Last viewed: 3 days ago

Loading...

I have been trying to find that sweet tone with this new addition to my collection, Maple, in blue Duco, around 1964 59xxx,but it seems just too ringy for my taste.

Different heads don't seem to help

This snare has no tone control from the factory, any advice ?

I don't want to drill any holes, of course..

I have replaced the snare wires since this photo was taken, so just ignore that, lol

If you can't tune out the ring with some tweaking of the heads and wire tension, try Moon Gel. I hate using anything, even internal mufflers, but sometimes it's necessary. The beauty of the Moon Gels is that you can cut them into smaller pieces to achieve the desired effect and you can take it off the head and put it back in it's little canister when you're ready to pack up. Or, the old tried and true method of pinched pieces of gaff tape is easy and effective if you have access to some.

Try an Emperor Coated on the Batter.

or

Try a Die-cast Rim on Batter side.

or

Put your wallet on the batter head.

good luck sir.

I am a fan of a gel at 10:00 and 2:00 on my snare batters.

BTW, that looks like a Student Model Radio King to me. Same drum as the Hollywood Ace, but with single flange hoops and clips rather than the Hollywood Ace's stick savers. I bought a nice '64 red sparkle SMRK and "converted" it to a Hollywood Ace by swapping the hoops. Swapped them back and resold it recently....

What's a better sounding drum, a SMRK or a Hollywood Ace ?

Which is more desirable/valuable ?

Thanks for the advice, everyone !

OP's drum is quite simply a Student Model snare. Nothing Radio King about it. Rapid strainer, single flange hoops with clips and no tone control. Hollywood Ace has tone control and stick saver hoops. Radio King has three point strainer, stick savers and tone control.

I think I want to convert it to Hollywood Ace specs, thanks for the ID

(Now I just need the parts)

Or if I was in the UK I would say, need spares.

I have three or four of these... "Rogers external mufflers".. these were supplied with some Dynasonic's in the 70's but were also available as an accessory.. They do also fit onto a Slingerland "Sticksaver" rim... and work well.

As a matter of fact I am using them in some recording of toms at the moment..

There are usually some floating around on ebay..

Cheers

John
