Slingerland double tom problem

Loading...

Hi folks,

I've been looking for a Super Set-O-Matic double tom holder (bass mounted) for ages, but nothing has come up in the UK.

I'm looking to mount a 12" & 13" on the bass, and wondered if anyone has any clever workarounds for this?

I don't want to use suspension mounts, and drilling is definitely out of the picture. The issue is the D section tubing, and the fact that nobody uses this anymore (understandably).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

James

If you can find the completely round down tube and lower section of a Set-o-Matic tom mount system, you can make it work. The receiver on your bass drum is designed to accept the D shaped down tube. The receiver can be replaced with a receiver designed to accept the round down tube. The mounting hole pattern for the receiver is the same.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.

That would only work if the new receiver had the same dims as the original Slingy one though.

Another option is to bastardise a Yamaha twin holder somehow, I guess.

The double tom mounts come up on Ebay now and again, but tend to be pricey. Steve Maxwell at Maxwelldrums.com manufactures a brand new single tom set-o-matic tom mount for $110. You could mount one tom from your bass drum and another from a cymbal stand. I found the original set-o-matic dual tom mount on Ebay. It was dirt cheap because one of the short (2”?) mounting posts had snapped off. I use it in a multiclamp on a cymbal stand, and it stays right there.

Just my thoughts...

ps. Sorry about the sideways photo. I forgot: take only landscape photos with your phone!

Spotted a pair of the short arms on a FB page yesterday.. look through a few posts on the "Slingerland sets & snare drums" facebook page.. they would be half of your quest..

Cheers

John

The original Set-O-Matic holder is a worthless POS in my book, with those stubby little 2" arms. Better to look for the improved version that came out a few years later; many more options in terms of placement, and much more freedom to move the toms around to suit your needs.

The other potential problem is that the base plate is positioned differently for the Super SOM than the standard double SOM. The standard one had the base plate mounted more or less in the center of the bass drum while the SSOM had the plate mounted out towards the front of the drum. So even if you found the SSOM assembly it will probably put the toms in an awkward position if you put it on a bass drum drilled for the standard SOM.

One idea would be the old Gretsch style double tom holder that used the diamond plates on the toms. The bolt pattern for the diamond plates is the same as the SOM receivers so they will interchange without drilling (Slingerland used these same plates before they introduced the SOM set-up). On the bass drum I think the Gretsch base will work as well although you might have to enlarge the center hole and the plate would be sideways. I think it could work but the Gretsch holder is a clunky contraption that makes even the standard SOM look like an engineering marvel.

Cheers for the replies folks, plenty to chew over.

Much as I bloody hate them, I may have to go back to using suspension mounts.

You can always use two snare stands with the bass drum off set a bit. I have done that before.
