Slingerland Cutaway drum set

Loading...

I have a chance to buy these for a decent price. The heads are toast but the shells are in good shape. The tom mounting hardware is included. The bass drum has both hoops but the floor tom is missing the bottom. Has anyone ever played one of these? It would be for a novelty more than anything but didn't want to **** away any money if there is no resale whatsoever. My investment will be around $500. The only catalog I saw them in was the 1979 catalog. Sorry about the pic. That is the best I can at the moment.

Thanks,

Member "Bermuda" has a very collectible set of those... His were previously used in the Neil Diamond "Jazz Singer" movie & soundtrack album.. You will easily pick up a bottom hoop for the 18" (which sound amazing)..

Here's a link..

Cheers

John

The Jazz Singer movie was 1980 so it makes sense Dennis St. John (?) used them in recording songs for it.

Yes... it was Dennis St John that gifted them to Bermuda.

I've owned and played several such kits. They're well made heavy maple shell drums. The cutaways have aluminum strips attached to the bottom shell edges to avoid damage to the wood. They sound fine and perform just as any other top line concert tom setup.

I passed. When he finally sent detailed pics, the outer ply of the toms were in terrible shape and actually coming apart in a couple of places.

FYI, here's part of Dennis' Jazz Singer kit (I have additional cutaway and regular concert toms, floor tom, and another kick.)

I did play these at a memorial for Dennis a few years ago, with their original heads and tunings (many of the rods are gummed up) and they sounded loud and thunderous! The Slingerland kicks were always great!
