Slingerland Blakrome Super Rock Score....and questions. Last viewed: 3 days ago

Loading...

Found this baby at GC and added it to my arsenal! It is a mid to late 70's Slingerland in Blakrome!

At first I thought it was a Super Rock No. 51N but it has a 12 and 14 inch Rack Tom with the 18 inch floor and 24 inch Kick. No 13? It also appears that the 14 and 12 are set up for playing on the left side of the kick from the players perspective. So I am not sure what crazy configuration the guy was using especially with the set-o-matic stands set up the way they are. I have never seen a set-o-matic tom post with the short arms on one side only. Weird? Anyone seen this before?

Either way I am excited. It came with a 10 lug 6.5 Sound King, a bunch of old Slingy stands and the drums appear to be 3 ply since they have re-enforcement rings! I have not seen to many of the bigger sized 70's Slingerlands that were not 5 ply. No extra holes and every tension rod and washer seems to be in place!

As usual more info on this kit would be fantastic!

The serial numbers are all in the 300,000 range with silver and black Niles Badge.

Here are some pics!

I'm not sure about kit configurations as I bought mine as individual drums in '79 (already had a couple of pieces and mom and dad didn't want to try to sell used drums. ???). What I do know is Blakrome was used from 77-79. I believe all the shells then still 3ply w/maple rerings. The metal wraps didn't get a verywarm reception as they were pron to denting and rust. I know there are some Slingy experts out there that can tell you more about the tom mount. I don't think they came with a bolt in one side.

That's a definite chop on the tom holder.

Those are sweet!! Congrats. Yes odd thing with the SOM's with the bolt in there. Is it threaded into the other end? Can't think why someone would do that unless it's 1 pc pressed in there and needed to secure the other side?? LOL easy fix with a new one. Anyhoooo they look great.

Glenn.

Not a guru just havin fun with some old dusty drums.

Thanks FFR428! The SOM is strange huh? It is threaded all the way through to the other side. He actually did that on two of em. 1 for the tom holder on the kick and a freestanding one on a cymbal stand. Oh well I usually play 1 up 1 down and throw the rack tom on a snare stand anyway. Drums should clean up nice. Not to scratched up on the metal. Couple small digs here and there but it already looks kick ass from just a couple feet away.

Hey Blackrome what do you shine your shells up with?

My bet is that what you have is part of larger kit. The 14" with Left side mounting was probably paired with a 15" hanging off of the same stand..Eg; a 670T or similar.

IMO the 12" is a better blend with the 14" anyhow.

Nice Kit, and I can vouch for the 24 & the 6.5...

Cheers

Great looking set inside and out!! The mount situation is pretty weird but who cares. The parts will be pretty easy to find if you want to get them. The most important thing is how GREAT their gonna sound once you get them up and running with your heads of choice. I'll bet the 12, 14 , 18 toms will really compliment one another in terms of pitch with less fiddling than 12 & 13 setup. That bass and snare are gonna kick some serious tail, too. Congrats on the buy.

Nice looking set.

I had two sets of BC over the years. Since there a metal wrap, treat them like a car. Give them a wax job. I had one set that looked like someone gave them a bath in the ocean. Rust heaven. They were candidates for a rewrap.

Keep your eye pealed on Fee Bay. The tom holders are listed alot on there.

That makes total sense PopsOld Skins. Good advice. The only rust I see on this kit right now is a little bit of typical surface rust on the rims. That should polish off pretty easy. I will definitely hit it with some wax on the shells and post some after pics when she is all cleaned up. I have like 4 kit projects going at once right now it's nuts! Need to quit drum hunting for a bit and start restoring!

Skapunk,

I've never really polished them before, I just keep them wiped off. I will warn you about too much rubbadubdub. I use to lay my sticks on top of the kick and eventually it wore through the anodizing (or whatever they used to make them black) so now there are light spots next to the two top front lugs. I plan on a complete cleaning soon since I'm not gigging with them anymore. I will probably just try a mild spray on - wipe off cleaner or just simply wax them.
