Hello, I have recently acquired a 70's Slingerland concert tom "pop" outfit (12/13/16/22 3ply shells) and have been looking at adding possibly some smaller toms (8" & 10")
Is it my imagination or are all of the smaller than 12" drums 5 ply?

Slingerland's concert toms first appeared in the catalog '71, 1970. There is no mention of the ply for the shells. By the 1977-78 catalog, all the part numbers were changed from previous catalogs and there are separate numbers for both 3-ply and 5-ply...BUT...there is a footnote saying that "all 6", 8" and 10" shells are 6-ply". I'm guessing that it's a typo and they meant 5-ply. Still, why show separate numbers for these sizes in both 3 and 5 ply and then say they're only available in the higher ply?

That's too funny. I was looking at a set of concert toms on eBay in 10/12/13/14 and only the 10" was 5 ply. It kinda reminds me of when Gretsch only had triple flanged hoops for their smaller toms.
