Anyone have experience with these shells/drums? Maple/Poplar/Mahogany w/o reinforcement rings. Short lived before they went to the 5 ply version.

According to DrCJ Wenk 3-ply without rings and 5-ply were available at the same time with the no ring 3-ply used on their economy line of drums mid '81-'86. Same shell as older 3-ply but without re-rings. Sometimes have gray speckled interior. Shell article at the VDG.

I've played on two sets. They sound very warm and "whoomph" like.

I had a set. The "Spirit" series. Good sounding set. One of the one's I wish I'd kept, in retrospect. Warm, easy tuning, good looking and light. The big Pearl style mounts had Slingerland markings. The band at the time was very loud, and I went to big Ayottes to keep up.
