Slingerland 1968 Blue Agate Clean Up

Just arrived. Decided to take some shots of it before I lay a hand on it.

It's in WAY better condition than I had anticipated. Very happy about that.

Serial Nrs.

20 - 225152

12 - 225147

13 - 231123

16 - 231877

That's pretty good numbers.

The wrap has no fade that I can see. I'll know more once I start ripping into them.

I looked through the clear heads and can see the insides look very nice upon first glance. I think the inner ply of the bass might have some screw pressure bits where someone overtightened. I'll pull the heads and verify.

But, other than that, they look pretty good. I can't find any bad spots or other goofiness.

This one will be fun.

Well. Took it apart. Gave it the once over. Here's the findings...

1. There is a very small area of snare rash on the 12 inch tom

2. There is a very small crack in the wrap at the bass spur.

3. One of the bass hoops is missing the inlay strip.

That's it. No other issues. Unbelievable.

Had to change the name of this thread to "clean up". There's not much to do on this kit to get it ready.

Checked the condition of the wrap.

All wrap is VERY tight. So much so that I caught myself checking the grommets just to make sure it was original. Absolutely zero fade on this kit. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch.

Checked all the metal parts.

All the chrome is in really good shape. The zinc screws are almost all perfect. No rust and no oxidation. Unreal.

I haven't cleaned anything yet. This one's almost a freebie.

Here's a shot of the bearing edge. They are seriously rounded over. VERY smooth and clean.

I'm curious about these edges, though. My two other Slingerland kits (later years) have more pronounced edges. I'll do a unique thread for that piece.

Nice edges.

You have to stop posting pics of that kit, I can't take it anymore!

It's been quite a while since I was able to work on my drums. No need to revisit the 'why' of that statement.

I finally got this one as done as I'm going to get it.

I thought it would be cute to set it up close to what the cat pic looked like. If you check the 68 Slingerland cat, this model kit was represented by the blue agate drums. Why not set it up like that...

So, it's in good shape. Like I noted prior, there are a couple of very small "flaws", but overall, this thing is in very nice condition. I'm impressed with it.

sweet kit!

Bass drum looks like a 20'', eight lugs?

Love the blue agate wrap, nice score!
