Slingerland 12"x22" 1960 Restoration

Loading...

I refinished an old set of Radio Kings using Maloof oil from Rockler. They were originally painted and the paint had all but flaked off. You wet sand it into the shell starting at 320 then let it dry for 24 hrs. You repeat the process using finer grits (400, 600, 800, 1200) and letting it dry in between. I think there are threads on the forum about this. The finish is unbelievable and my RKs are my primary gigging kit.

Those look nice Chappy. with the fill etc. I have on mine I don't think I could get them looking good enough for a Natural finish. I already have a natural finish set. I am going to rewrap this one.

Have been having some discussion on the wrap. I wanted WMP but not sure I can find a nice correct WMP vintage so may go with Red Glass Glitter.

I want it to scream 60's.

I am open for suggestions.

Recieved the 9"x13" 3 ply maple shell won on ebay yesterday for the project.

Very nice in round shell. Bearing edges are good. That discoloration is where the lacquer is gone.

sanded it and it is fine.

I was able to secure a nice 16"x16" 60's 3 ply with re-rings floor tom from a fellow Floridian forum member. Had that white glue on it from a previous Satin wrap but sanded it off and then denatured alcohol. The Fungus Amungus idea. Worked well. Just tedious. Finished up the hoops. They came out excellent.

Ready for wrap and clean the Bass drum hardware up and get some lugs and rims for the toms. I am going to use the 3 mounts that were on the bass drum for the floor tom legs. So far the 22" 16" 13" is what I have and going with. Not sure what to do with the Bass drum. Use one mounted cymbal mount for the ride?. The bass was set up as a Krupa/Rich cymbal mount configuration but strange the size is 12"x22".

There was no rail mount on the bass or anything for a tom mount. From what I was told the tom must have clamped on to the hoop. I can use a stand for the 13" and just leave the holes under the wrap and leave my options open. Really don't want to drill for anything. I need some opinions on how to configure this bass drum guys.

I picked up a Feb 65 13" tom from A member from my former stomping grounds in Muscle Shoals Alabama. Thanks Spencer. He practically gave it to me to help me out on my project. Been in his warehouse for years. Lot's of work cleaning it up but it has much mojo. I am going to use it instead of the other 13". May eventually wrap it too and another floor tom but going for the three now.

Got the red glass glitter wrap off pretty easy with the heat gun, but it was sticky and had glue all on it. I sprayed it with Citristrip and let it sit overnight, then scraped it off the best I could the next morning. Wiped it up with denatured alcohol until I ran out then WD40, which actually worked good, then finished it off with some goof off. Someone took off the bottom head and wraped black electrical tape around the reso side and painted squiggly lines inside the shell, it left some nasty residue but I finally got it all ready for wrap.

It's a really nice shell. The lugs cleaned up really well.

Guess I will place my wrap order next week. Have in mind what I am going to do.

Finished the wrap and lugs etc. on the Bass drum today. I have 15 of the original tension rods and will get the other 5 eventually but put some new straight rods on there for now. I have the cymbal mount but not a L arm so did not install it yet..will trim that felt strip too. I still have not positively identified this drum. The 12"x22" Bass drums in the catalogs had single lugs in the middle of the drum. I think the tom mounted on the hoop on this one too. Finished the 13" and about to finish up the 16".

I am performing at the Palm Beach Fairgrounds the next 3 days so hope to have full set pics Monday.

Got the drums playable today. Very happy so far. Still need a couple of things.

12"x22" 1960 9"x13" 1965 16"x16" 1960's All 3ply with rerings. They sound really nice and fat, warm wood. Can't wait to play a Jazz gig with them. Thanks for all the reply's to my PM's with questions seeking suggestions and advice.
