Slangy Aluminum vs. Ludwig Acrolite?

So, I've had a an 8-lug Aluminum Slingy and was told it was just their version of the Acrolite. My question is, which is better:

As a snare

For collectability

For it's $ value

Also, is there a particular Acrolite that has more value and did they make a 10-lug version like the Slingerland?

The Slingy aluminums are like Acros and I think it really comes down to the question of if you're a Ludwig guy or Slingy guy. I happen to own a 62 aluminum Slingy (6 lug) and a 63 Acro (8 lug) and like them both! Both have COB hoops, but the Slingy is all original...down to the heads and wires! Even got the original suitcase with that one. I paid a lot less for the Slingy than I did for the Acro...which seems to be the trend.

Yes, Sir! The early 60's Acros with Keystone badges, baseball bat mufflers and P-83 strainers seem to fetch the most $. Basically, the older they are, the more they are worth. This particular Acro has a pre-serial badge (won't find too many of these) with factory crimped snare beds and sounds awesome!

the shells of the first run of acros or prototypes, whichever theory you believe were made almost exactly like the slingys. Rolled and welded shell, folded over bearing edges. The acros had a center bead and the slingys didn't. The later productions keystone acros had the same shell as the supraphonic, just a different finish.

It's a beauty.

I happen to have the COS 8 lug slingy jazz fest and it's got a fairly similar sound to the acro. It does have a beaded seam, however, and crimped snare beds.

I have a related question; I have a Supraphonic, late 70s, that does not have snare beds. Does anyone know anything about this?

To the best of my knowledge, only the very early Supras had crimped snare beds...so even though you can't easily tell, they are probably there on yours. Anyone feel free to correct me or add to this if you have any additional info.

Thank you very much. I will have to take a real close look next time I've got the heads off.

Also, I have the same kit you have in your sig. It's a little bit older - April '62 - but the same. I assume your kick does not have not a painted interior . . .

Actually...the inside of my kick is painted...couldn't find any date stamps though. But...all of my serial numbers are in the 1000-2000 range, meaning these were some of the first serial # drums to roll of the line! I have the matching Supra also with a 1366 serial number.
