Sky blue pearl wrap restoration Last viewed: 10 seconds ago

I wonder why some of them green and some of them gray? Is it just a matter of their surroundings?

It was the lighting.

You can use retro brite, which is basically peroxide and oxyclean, I did it on some really badly yellowed WMP shells I have, but the gloss is now completely gone. I have a '67 super classic in sbp and I love the faded wrap as well.Sky blue pearl is still available from ludwig and everyone else if you want a new looking kit buy a new ludwig legacy.Steve maxwell even has them with gullwing spurs, consolette tom mounts and no gaskets! full on 60's style!

Thanks for the reply. I am not skilled enough to do a clear coat or else I'd try that.

I just wasn't sure of its looked down upon when the vintage sbp are so dofferent where the lugs are. I guess they are all like this.

My vote is to NOT try and get the original color back. The SBP is still beautiful even with its greyish color. Clubdate mentioned retrobrite, it will remove yellowing on WMP but as he said also removes the shine. Jeff C

If I knew how to re-clear it Id try it.

But Yeah I think I'm just going to clean these up as best can be.

I've started cleaning all the hardware with a toothbrush and dawn then drying and applying gel gloss, letting it dry to a haze and then wiping it with a cloth.

Today I am going to paint the interiors white. Someone painted them black

i see what looks to be a factory cymbal mount on your bass drum. based on that, your kit wouldnt be a hollywood kit(2 ride toms). if your kit was a pre serial hollywood kit, it would have mostly like come with two 12's. your 12 that you have would have a round base clip type mount instead of a diamond mount or a mount just like that cymbal mount.

does your bass drum have 4 holes where a rail mount goes?

No it does not have 4 holes for a rail mount, and my cymbal mount is on the left (drummers POV) side.. so its like it was ordered for a left handed drummer.

The tom mount it had was an aftermarket japan made POS that I removed..

Really nice kit. I have a Slingerland kit in the same wrap color. Has the same fade as yours and just a nice players grade kit for me. Yes the light will affect the colors sometimes they look grey and other times with a green or yellowish tint. I like it becasue it hides scars and scuffs easily. Plus is just a bad a$$ color too! :) Have fun with them~! On the interior paint my bass was also painted black so I used a rattle can choc milkish color which matched the SL interior pretty well. Would be nice for your bass to be natural but if a major pia for you maybe just white like the toms? They'd all look pretty fresh then. Being the no paint-paint change over was in phase be ok? Keep the pics coming!

Thanks! Yeah they really do hide a lot of imperfections! I have noticed all kinds of burn holes and stuff that it hides well.

I may have to try that rattle can idea because I called my local Benjamin Moore supplier and they said they need more info on the actually color code for the paint.. so far all i have is this

""Ludwig White Interiors - Benjamin Moore Regal Semi Gloss Finish N333 (Formerly - Benjamin Moore Aqua Glo White)""

from the --http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/painting_shell_interiors.html

and they said that isnt a color, its just a model of paint.

First of all, let me say that I think SBP is a very classy color whether new or any of the various iterations of fade. It's my favorite pearl finish. Your kit looks great. Polish it up and enjoy that.

Having said that, I have an idea about adding the shine back to a finish if you have tried the RetroBrite or similar process. I have not tried this but it would be worth a shot on a beater shell. The product is called Vertglas and it is used to restore fiberglass boat finishes. I used on it on a 24' SeaRay cruiser that I had that had gotten to the point where I was no longer happy with my wax finishes.

I believe you would only need the number 3 sealer. The product is simply an acrylic finish. It is very easy and quick to apply and really looks pretty great when finished. I did 6 coats on my boat and had one drip that I had missed. That is pretty good considering how much surface area and fittings there were with which to contend. As I recall the "applicator" was a standard foam brush. The end result was pretty spectacular. The pictures on their site are the real deal. One thing I would do differently would be to buff the finish once it had cured to REALLY smooth it out.

I believe it would work like gangbusters on current plastic wraps. What I don't know is what would happen with the older acetate wraps. It would be worth a shot for Those really yellowed WMP Clubdates now that you have more or less de-yellowed them. Personnally I would leave the SBP kit as is though.

Hey thanks so much fort his reply,

I'll have to try that stuff! I heard that the RetroBrite removes the clear coat yet restores the color.. and i am not of that skill to re gloss the shell.. I think if i had an old beater i wanna try for myself!

I am trying to find the correct color of paint to go buy for the interior white

http://www.vintagedrumguide.com/painting_shell_interiors.html

says its a benjamin moore color but "doesnt state the color #" is what my local dealer said to me this morning so that leaves me baffled for which color to buy
