sizzle cymbal

Loading...

Large sizzles. I remember a cymbal in I think the Ludwig catalog back in the 60's.

It had large chrome sizzles about the size of a silver dollar. Does anyone have a picture of one of these? I could be wrong about the cat but it would have to be one of the big 4.

Thanks

That large a sizzle ?

I have seen 'Jangle" cymbals from the 30's and such...those had massive things attached to 'em...but have never seen something of that proportion on a 60's cymbal...

I think you will find something like that in 50's and 60's catalogs.

I actualy started playing drums in 1959. I had just about every catalog from every American drum company from the late '50's thru the '60's. While what you're referring to may exist, I have no recollection of anything like that from that period.

OK here it is in the 1941 catalog.

I remember seeing it in a catalog when I was a kid in the 60's.

My dad was a band director and a playing musician so we had catalogs around.

Must have been an older catalog. I wonder what they sound like?

I wonder if it was '50's version of an effects cymbal.

I have one of these. Unfortunately I don't have any ways of recording a soundfile, but maby I can record a crappy little video just to give you guys an idea of the sound. It's a completely diffferent sound than what we're used to. A ''buzz'' is really a good way to describe it.

Here's my cymbal

Those are basically tamborine jingles riveted to the cymbal. I've got a junk cymbal I'm going to rivet beer bottle caps to.

I remember a goofball in high school (not me this time), who made a sizzle cymbal with rivets and flattened bottle caps.

You can or maybe can't imagine the sound this thing made.

Sort of like a drawer of utensils hitting a tile floor.

There only a very few truly "junk" cymbals, and unfortunately many of them are some thin stamped MIJ sheets from the 60s. Most any cymbal can make a desirable sound. It just depends on your style of music, and mainly if play effects musics for movies...but to say anything other your "favorite" cymbal is junk...not really fair. I happen to like the sound of certain NS-12 with certain drums, and many styles of B20 with other drums. The best drums in the world make certain vibrations that don't really sound great with the perceived best cymbals. This is all physics and vibrations technology. Your favorite cymbals may not sound great with certain other drums, or in other settings.

Guys, a lot of cymbals that are considered "trash" or "entry level", even "intermediate"...sound good with drums other than yours. My "POS" MIJ drums, that many local drummers are now asking to record, sound best, IMHO sound great, with NS-12 Ludwig Standards/Paiste Stanople or any of their other stencils from this era. They just work.
