Shout out to Matt at CT Pro Percussion

Loading...

For those of you that attend the various Vintage Drum Shows you may know him as the guy with the really cool Cigar Wrap drum kit.

For those that are experienced members of this forum you know him as our guru of antique and vintage marchers.

There is much more to Matt . . .

I had a chance to go see Matt at his home this past weekend and experience an artisan at work.

It was an opportunity to see Matt "tucking calf skin drum heads" for one of my snares.

I had never seen this in person and you know what, it was fantastic to watch. He brought a late 1890'ish Duplex back to life along with an early 1900's single head snare by crafting calf skin heads for me.

I really have to say, Matt has a skill and is truly an artist at what he does.

He and I talked for about 2 hours as he worked his skills on the builds. He is a wealth of knowledge about crafting heads as well as drum manufacturer history. It was a great experience for me.

So, if you need any natural skins made, he is the guy !

Thanks again Matt and yes I checked my "to do list" of drums and there are another 8 snares worth of heads that I will be reaching out to you to make for me.

Michael

Yep, great guy, and great craftsman. Besides all his custom-builds and his meticulous restorations, he's the "go-to" guy here in CT for anything rope-tensioned. He even lugs a huge mechanical press to all the Fife & Drum musters here in CT to compress and re-rope drums right in the field. I'll be contacting him to tuck some snare heads for me. I bought an old (1890's) single-tensioned snare online without realizing it had a 13.5" diameter. DOH

Here's three snares Matt custom built for me...

Glad that he's recovered from that huge robbery incident a few years back. Hope he checks in here soon. We haven't seen his work for a while.
