Shipping from Cold areas - Seeking Expert advice

Ok. I have been wondering with the weather getting colder and the drums older...what is the expert advice on temperature for shipping and storage. Let's say that in the back of a truck it could get to idk 20 degrees farh. and in the house it's 68-72. What to worry for a 50s, 60s, 70s say 3 ply slingerland kit in putting in back of a box truck. In my case, I'm picking up drums but wondered if we should worry about expansion/contraction damage when shipping private freight or fedex?

Interested in expert advice here and experience.

Rock/Jazz Drummer - Pro from Nashville in 80's, hacking for fun today.
- Kit: 1986 Pearl MX-9 Series; Paiste Signature cymbals (original owner mid-90's)
- Roland TD-7 Electronic Drum Set (original owner)
- 1965 Slingerland White Satin Flame 20, 13, 16 w/all original hardware & Zildjian cymbals (2nd owner)

Actively seeking early 70's (or 60's) Slingerland drum sets in very good condition and classic Zildjian cymbals.

I think cold or heat is an issue over a long period of time. Short term - not so much.

If it were me I'd ship FedEx + just have them hold it at your FedEx location for pickup. If you have the xtra cash you could ship Priority - less time in truck.

To say the least, these old drums are fragile. No one knows what will happen with a major temperature swing like that with any given drum kit. Why take the chance? Wraps are plastic, drums are wood, and glue holds them together. These materials all have different rates of expansion/contraction, and most likely have been through it before. So, at some point, there will be separation, splitting, or cracking.

Will it be during this shipment????

DO NOT ship painted calf skin heads in the winter!

Last year I bought a 1920's - 25" painted calf skin painted head that shipped from VA to CT. Was supposed to be an overnight delivery. Unfornutalety it shipped when the north east was hit with a nor-Easter and it sat in a truck for 2-days because the roads were closed. Long story short, after aclimating the drum and head to my house temps, the day after that it was unpacked the paint started to peal and chip off of the head. The shipping company called it an uncontrolled act of God so no retribution.

So yes, the same goes for drums and the glues that hold the laminate layers together and also the wrap to the drum, the drastic changes from Unheated tractor trailers, air plane storage spaces, and delivery trucks will cause havoc to a drum if shipped in the winter time.

BTW, I am driving 5 hours to pick up a kit in Jan so the same does not happen to another beautiful 1920's painted head

remember- if it goes air freight, even over night, the aircraft hold will reach -50 at altitude anyway...

ship ground when temps at sending and receiving location are similar. Or plan a trip and pick them up in person.
