From Purdie Shuffle

Here's another favorite of mine (as if it isn't hard to tell...) the Purdie Shuffle. I'll provide the two best examples I could find. Either video will get you there. All roads lead to Rome:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ6xPGgoePg&feature=relatedhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xg3lAbifyPE&feature=relatedMy wife loves it whenever I play the Purdie Shuffle, tells me it makes her want to dance. Any groove that can make a woman want to shake her booty is a drum rhythm you want to know how to play - well!Enjoy, - Bernard Purdies' half-time shuffle is another pure fun groove to play on the drums. It just drips mojo. You'll begin to see a pattern in the kind of drumming that turns me on from the lessons I've been posting all along. I'm into tasty, bad-ass, musical drumming. I figure if it makes me feel good when I play something, whoever is listening will feel it too. I'm a drummer in a Blues band, Blues is all about feeling/groove and tasty playing. I want to give some props to one of my hero's, Tommy Wells, who is, for my money, the most talented working Blues drummer in the business. Tommy plays a lot of session work, all kinds of music, but nobody can touch him when it comes to the Blues. Always knows what to play and where to put it. As solid as drummers come.Sample:http://www.jimmyhall.com/media/too_tall.movJohn

You mean Tommy Boom Boom Wells.... :) and I do believe i sent you a copy of Rendezvous with the blues Tommy plays on the entire CD along with Jack Pearson the best guitarist on the planet.....

Hey Mike,

I didn't know it was Tommy's band when you sent the CD's, didn't register. I have been listening to the CD's in the car and for the last two months I kept raving to my wife about what a great drummer is playing on there. Then I finally got around to playing the Live one and I heard Jim introduce, Tommy. My jaw dropped when I realized it was Tom.

Thank you so much for the music. I have really been enjoying all of them.

You da man!

To show an example of a practical musical application for some of the patterns we've been discussing, here's one of Stanton's trio doing a number I love called: Neeps and Tatties. (Love the title too!)

Stanton just kills from start to finish. This cat is just a virtuoso on the drums and here, in this video, his drumming provides the skeletal framework for the entire piece. Stanton drives this thing with the drums from behind making the groove flow like a river after a heavy rain. Strictly 'Groove or Die' type stuff. Deceptively 'simple.' The great ones always make it all look easy.

This is the kind of drummer that will cut your head clean off if you had to play on the same bill with him. Just no way to follow an act like Stanton's.

Enjoy:

You Tube is great and all but, when I'm 'on' somebody, especially if I'm learning a lot from it, I like to support the artist. Cop all the stuff you can from You Tube, but help to support guys like Stanton by buying the DVD's of his lessons and CD's of his group. I want to help guys like Stanton pay the rent. That way they have the free time to make more music and to teach old wanna-be's like us. Be a crying shame to have a guy with that kind of talent having to pump gas or flip burgers to make ends meet. We're all drummers for Pete's sake, we should be able to support each other every way we can. Brothers from other mothers...

Buy American! Support your local artists. 'Buy' Stanton Moore!
