Selling Drums on Craigslist

Loading...

This is not a question, just a little story I have about selling drums on Craigslist.

I have my Fullerton era Rogers kit on cl for $500 or trade. So I get a text from this guy asking if I'll trade for a dw performance series kit, you know the kind, 8x10,14x16,18x22 in a reddish laquer finish. I tell the guy that I'm not interested, mainly because of the sizes, he's says ok, maybe I'll just buy them, but he'd like to play them first. I said, sure, I'll meet you at my storage unit and you can try them out. So he shows up with two of his friends in two separate cars. I thought, uh-oh, what's this all about? Well, they turned out to be nice young guys. So the guy interested in the Rogers, jumps on the kit and begins playing, I was surprised how good he was and the kit sounded great, I never get to hear them from out front. Both of his friends were impressed with the kit, as was he, I thought I had a for sure sale. Once he's done he says he loves them, but he has no cash, I only have my dw with me. What? I let it go and told him to keep in touch if he decides to actually buy the drums.

I just don't understand why anyone would show up to check out a kit with no intention of buying them.DOH

Hey jr!

Good story. If I had to guess, I'd say this person was just hoping you might be desperate to part with them and make the trade. Really makes no sense to me, but you never know what other people are thinking. Sorry you had to go through all of that nonsense, though.

It`s unfortunate when someone wastes your time like that...There is no need for it...Especially when you told him beforehand that you were not accepting his offer!!

Once, I was selling a set on Kijiji (Canada`s CL), and a potential buyer emailed a ridiculous low offer...I replied back with a counter offer...He then insisted that I was to sell the set for the offer amount and he wasn`t taking no for an answer...He demanded my address so he could pick them up...Needless to say, I told him to go pound salt...

My learnings from this ordeal - Ignore all low ball offers...

I guess we meet all kinds when we deal on internet selling platforms...It comes with the territory, I guess...

Sorry JR, I didn`t mean to hijack your thread with my rant!!

Cheers

I've had mostly good luck, only one back luck deal on Craigslist... of course you always get the standard scam emails when you sell.. money order for extra money if you'll let a friend pick them up.

I have purchased a decent champagne keystone Ludwig set, some OK red sparkle keystone Ludwigs, a partial set of jellybean Vistalites, a pretty nice Supraphonic... sold two sets with no issues.

I did get dragged on one wild goose chase... about a 90 minute drive to purchase a Rogers set and the guy would not answer his door. I could hear the TV, car in the driveway, we had made prior arrangements for the pickup and I came cash in hand. He had seemed real straight up. I couldn't get any further correspondence from him. Since he was a decent drummer and played a modern kit, he was probably just taking advantage of the only opportunity he could get to play a vintage Rogers kit to see how they compare to the modern stuff (unfortunately at your time and expense!). Bringing the DW kit along with no cash in hand only showed his desperation to make the trade.

All my CL transactions have been nothing but positive. Best one: Drove 2 hours (including the slow ferry) from CT to Long Island NY to pick up a Rogers 5-piece with Ludwig Hercules stands for the agreed price of $350. When I got there, I found the bass and toms had been redrilled for Ludwig mounts and there was lots of rust on the stands. ARRRGH!! So what made this the best deal? Discovering the FT was the rare 20x18" and it was in fine unmolested condition. Made the whole trip worthwhile.

Like Mamma said, sometimes CL is like a box of chocolates.

He could have asked one of his ding dong friends to lend him the money but deep down, i think that he really wanted to try and give you his modern kit one more time..

Keep fixing them up...

I did some research on the dw performance kit after he left and found out they are high quality drums made in the USA dw plant. They retail for around $1,500. So, I text the him and told him I'd take the dw if he three in the 22" Zildjian K Constinople he had. When he first inquired about Rogers, he had offered that cymbal and a dw snare. I know those cymbals are pricey, but his had a small chip on the edge, so I declined.

Anyway, I took the dw and cymbal, it may not be worth as much because of the chip, but it sounds fantastic. To make a long story short, I'm selling the dw to a guy tonight for $625, so I'm getting more than I would had made on the Rogers, plus I have a nice cymbal to use.

I'm buying this red sparkle Club Date with money from dw sale. Not too shabby.

What makes it even better is that the Club Date comes with the L-arm and he's throwing in a vintage 18" Zildjian crash.
