sanding wrap - eliminating yellow on WMP / same on darkened BDP?

Loading...

Ok - please help me out a bit here guys. There was a post wither on here or over on the DFO that featured a video that a guy (in Europe somewhere) refurbed a Luddy FT - that was WMP, which had yellowed real bad. Well, he did a series of sanding the wrap and it got rid of the yellowing....and turned out just gorgeous.

I have a BDP (actually Charcoal Pearl) kit - and I bought a snare to match....and the snare is a bit darkened - and would match better if I were able to lighten it up a bit.

Could I do the sand job on it and get rid of the darkening or is that on the inside and impossible to eliminate?

Thanks in advance.....and please - if you also recall the yellowing WMP refurb video, please post the link to it so we can all see it again.

John

I know the video you are talking about and Im pretty sure the floor tom had sky blue wrap. But you are correct about the results, he did a fantastic job. It was basically wet sanding with 800 grit papre or something like that. Sanding might not remove yellowing from age, I think his was just real dirty and faded, but I can be wrong. I think youu would be better off googeling the word " retrobrite" or watch this video,

Either way, sanding or retrobrite is a risk, in my oppinion, so I hope these drums are not too important. I have a wonderful Ludwig downbeat piccolo snare my daughter gave me for Christmas last year. It has a yellowed WMP wrap and I was goin to do the retobrite treatment but I changed my my mind, to risky for me.

Hope trhis helps some what.

You have a good day too!

Thank you!

Thanks for the tip on the retro-brite.

Has anyone ever used this (retro-brite) on any wrap or any other drum part(s)?

Just so readers here understand - this is NOT the video I was speaking of (and yes, I know you know this Jeff - no implications) If anyone reading this here knows the video that I am referring to - it was a Luddy Floor Tom - please post it here. I can not find it. I also recall that he ended up selling it on Ebay - so that may help jog the memory.

....and so my question remains - does sanding 'fix' or lighten up darkened BDP (though my particular drum in question is "Charcoal Pearl").

I am hoping someone on here will be able to answer this - I am sure that someone knows the answer - abundant knowledge here.

INDEED - Yes there it is! Yeah, that guy did a wonderful job. I just read through that post again. Not sure what happened to Creighton's Gretsch 4105 shell.

I suppose the issue I have is that I first need to determine if my darkening of my wrap is internal or external. Is the issue on the outside edge, or is it a changing of color on the inside of the wrap? Now, once I find my polish that I used on my other shell restores, I will try that and it may just be that simple. Really my issue is a lack of contrast. The color will match up enough if I achieve some contrast, as my snare shell in question has darkened and lost contrast in the meantime. It may be notable that I am matching up a Star made (I think that's who made it - it's one of the round blue "Made in Japan" badges) - matching up to a Pearl made stencil. Not only is the original color a bit off, but the pattern is a bit different as well. It will get close enough if I just achieve the desired contrast.

I will shoot plenty of pics and post when my attempt is done (my attempt with my 3M polish that I use on wraps).

Thanks,

John
