RoyalStar acrylic kit

I remember these kits when they first came out (in Oz) and it would probably have been 74/75 - just after the Ludwig Vistalites came out.

Really? I was just a baby then. Were they very popular? It doesn't seem like there's many left these days. It'd be great to hear some more history on these drums, especially that around Australia back then.

All the acrylic shells sound more or less the same, right?

The only vistalites I've played so far are the RoyalStar acrylics so far, and only for about three hours yesterday. Actually three hours of Moby Dick, hehe. Massive FAT sound. Great fun. Its nuts.

I was actually enjoying playing them so much it took about half an hour to quickly grab some hihats, then later a splash, just couldn't break away. I'll be recording with them tomorrow, with full cymbals set up.Excited

Looking good! I have been scrubbing rusted hoops and hardware for a few days here and I have been having great results with only a thick water/baking soda paste and a soft toothbrush. The baking soda is mild enough that I don`t even need to wear gloves and it leaves me wondering why I didn`t know about this sooner. Why polish cymbals? Get your polishing kicks off on the chrome parts and let the cymbals patina up I`m thinking

I can't bring myself to polish cymbals, tried it once as a kid I think. I now very much like the cymbals fully patina'ed.

Baking powder- sold. Beats inhaling heavy duty chemicals for hours at a time, no good at all, outdoors with ventilation of course, but still a bit grosse. I've still got the floor tom to go so I'll try the Baking Powder there.

That badge (round, black/golden) I've never seen before at another kit.I know a golden/black badge with 'Royal Star', but that's elder and has a tonneau-shaped form (is that the correct term? - I know it only from wrist watches.)As far as I know Tama/ Star have used metric threads always. So a 'local' dealer in down under should be able to order it from the Australian distributor for you.Concerning 'Tama Labelling':The Tama catalogue pages show that 'TAMA' started in 1974 with the 'Imperial Star' catalogue, mentioning 'Tama' on the cover page for the very first time. All other catalogues before it do NOT mention Tama, but STAR only ;-)Ralf

Here in Germany we have a new producer of acrylic shells since some years:

If you search under 'Drums' you'll see their shells. They even have 'Sandwich shells' (= 2-ply: acryl in white plus clear layer outside) ... and an acrylic rack ...!

Well yes, technically they could be as Star is the forerunner of TAMA. And there are a few around, but it's not like they are on ebay every day, so they are considered desirable. I don't really prescribe to the word "rare or rarity" when speaking of modern drums, more like "hard to find", and "relatively unique" are, IMHO, better terms. And those are nice, as you stated, but the relative price should be in the ballpark of 500 bones. But that is only one man's opinion.

Nice kit! I had a Star 16" floor tom for a few years--someone had pieced together a Fibes 12", the Star 16", and a Ludwig 22" and put Ludwig lugs on all of them.

That floor tom was the best FT I've ever played. Warm, round, resonant tone. Wish I hadn't sold it.
